Pripyat - ghost town (featuring new author @maxim-ananko)

Excellent post! I thought I'd add a bit more info for anyone interested.

Spent fuel from the Soviet-designed RBMK (Reaktor Bolshoy Moshchnosti Kanalniy) reactors, like all those at Chernobyl, pose an ongoing problem that literally costs millions to deal with safely long term. And sadly, it is a very long term problem!

Here is a short video that talks about the spent fuel problem and how it is being dealt with at the Chernobyl site:

Also, the hastily constructed and now dangerously crumbling sarcophagus that encases unit 4 of Chernobyl's crippled nuclear power plant, also needs to be replaced for safety reasons.

Here is a short video that talks about the "new safe containment contract" which is currently underway:

Years later and that one site still requires so much ongoing investment in an attempt to simply make it safe again! I also find it interesting that the 2 videos I linked here, appear to be posted by the European Bank.

I wonder which organisation will pick up the tab for the same effort to deal with the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster site in 25 years from now?
