Introduction to the topic
Healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle are the perfect mix for halitosis prevention, an embarrassing and unpleasant phenomenon that affects both sexes of all ages.
To prevent bad breath, it is not enough just to recommend the use of toothpaste, toothbrush and mouthwash: it seems, in fact, that the diet greatly affects the freshness of a person's breath.
Food and smell of the breath
The food that is ingested is processed by our body and it seems that it is the food itself that determines the smell of the breath: therefore the quality of the ingested food plays an absolutely important role in characterizing the breath of the person. Until the time when our body does not completely eliminate the food intake, the smell of the breath continues to be strongly influenced by that particular food: this is a scientific fact, studied by the American Dentists Association.
Avocado against halitosis
Dr. Dalloca (graduate in Dentistry at Tufts University Boston and at the University of Pavia) asserts that: "a valid reason for the treatment of halitosis of gastrointestinal origin is the consumption of avocado which [...] eliminates the putrefaction of food in the intestinal tract ". Very particular statement because the fruit of Persea Gratissima (avocado) has mainly diuretic properties: probably this strange food is recommended to counteract the peculiar halitosis related to gastro-intestinal problems, thanks also to the fiber content. The difficulty in digesting, in fact, is often linked to a negative response that is reflected in the breath.
Water against halitosis
Surely, to enjoy a nearly constant feeling of cleanliness and freshness of the mouth, it is advisable to take high amounts of water: the dry mouth is in fact a cause-base of bad breath. Here is the reason why in the morning, when you feel the typical sensation of "dry mouth", you have a tendency that is more unpleasant. Precisely for this reason, we recommend the intake of at least eight glasses of water a day, the amount of which corresponds to almost 2 liters.
Some researchers hazard another piece of advice for a fresh breath: a glass of warm water with a teaspoon of apple vinegar accompanied by honey. This is because, probably, vinegar, being acid, promotes digestion at the gastric level, "eliminating" the food more quickly; despite this fact, the best technique is always to drink lots of water.
Correct and bad breath
A "Proper nutrition", in order to avoid or prevent halitosis, reckon on the intake of simple foods with meals, which should not be too rich in fat, nor excessively flavored and spicy. Too many spices, in fact, enhance the action of bacteria, which inevitably lead to the formation of bad breath odors. The main defendants in this sense are naturally the foods belonging to the family of liliaceae, such as garlic and onion, whose bad exhalations can be mitigated by the simultaneous intake of parsley.
