New name
As emailed January 17, we have a new name: Obyte. Our new name is short, easy to pronounce and spell, catchy, meaningful and has been warmly received! See this rebranding story for full details.
A new visual identity will be developed at a later date, in the meantime we have simply replaced the old name with the new name.
Bot war competition winners
A huge thank you to all the participants of the recent bot war, which recently concluded. Over a period of only 4 weeks, 6 contestants managed to complete their projects and build an Obyte Chat Bot completely from scratch. That's some serious work! Further, the competition period included Christmas and New Year when people are more commonly relaxing than setting up development environments. Not only was a lot of development done, but there were also several extremely detailed weekly update reports written.
See the announcement for full details, including the winners.
New web wallet
A community member has released this web wallet. We are grateful for the significant effort that has been put into releasing this, but note that it is not an official Obyte wallet. So by all means try it out, but we cannot endorse it yet. Use at your own risk. That said, we do see the convenience of web wallets, with some having found a lot of users for other crypto projects.
Join our new Discord community
Following feedback from the community we are moving from Slack to Discord. Please sign up to our new Discord community. Our Slack account is still live but we plan to migrate fully to Discord soon.
Join our new subreddit too!
As part of the renaming we were able to change the name of most of our social channels to Obyte, but this is not possible with subreddits. So please subscribe to our new subreddit.
Development summary
Evgeniy Stulnikov published a short summary on the [significant developments}(https://medium.com/byteball/results-of-the-year-in-byteball-for-developers-2018-e9b153e45a1f) that have been made throughout 2018. Much has occurred, and the platform is significantly more developed than this time last year. We will be building on the progress that has been made through 2019 and beyond!
Reminder - you can get paid for developing on Obyte though our {grants programme](https://medium.com/byteball/byteball-grants-program-906a71b93d3c). We also have a development resources website and a dedicated developer Telegram group.
Weekly Draw referral payout
The 5th Weekly Draw was the first draw somebody won the referral award too. So, for the first time, 300GB was distributed!
Having two draws at the same time for Whales and Goldfish has proved popular. You can improve your chances of being the next Prince of Whales or King of Goldfish by referring new users to the Weekly Draw, or increasing the balance of your wallet.
New email newsletter schedule
Throughout 2018 we sent the Obyte email newsletter on a weekly basis. We decided to change the schedule to bi weekly (twice per month) instead. Our team is small, and we feel the new schedule will be a better use of our time, whilst still keeping the community up to date on what is happening.
