Advice from a Turtle: grow a tough shell.

in ocean •  5 years ago

Sea turtles are one of the most fascinating creatures of the deep waters. They are ancient mariners of the seas. Sea turtles walked among the dinosaurs in the Jurassic era and were very similar as they are today, with theirs tough shells and special swimming fins. The intelligence and adaptability of sea turtles make them extremely well prepared to navigate and dominate the seas. Sea turtles are found in every ocean with the exception of the Leatherback turtles which are found only in the Australian coasts.

Hawsbill turtles (like Thomas), are highly coveted for their beautiful tortoiseshell, yellow brown shells. Absolutely beautiful.

Thomas, our resident @deepwaters Turtle has some advice for you today. Turtles depend on their hard shell for almost all peculiarities of life . Their backbone and main organs are fused to the back of the top shell. Their shell is their backbone and ultimate encasing. This video from a fun kids website explains it in the simplest form:

I like to think that life is a trial, and it is also filled with many ever increasing trials. We build on our mistakes by learning. Life is not fair and is not meant to be fair. The truth is that sometimes only the fittest survive. For us turtles, that means growing a tough shell. Having a tough shell in a way means being actively prepared for the adversities of life. Life will sometimes hit you hard and unexpectedly, but you need to learn from these trials.
What matters in life is protecting your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being. Your outer shell is meant to protect you from the threats against your integrity.

Unfortunate situations do happen, but you need to be prepared to face them. The best way to do that is having a hard shell; being tough in the face of adversity. This can be for example, having the grit to finish a project when you feel like giving up. Possibly also, following up on your promises even though it may be a losing scenario. Maybe it is admitting errors and losing face, but ultimately owning the truth. These things take mental and spiritual fortitude. Being tough, or have grit are many times much better indicators of success than academic achievement.

In short, my turtly advice to you is to show fortitude in the face of adversity. Grow a tough shell so as to accept criticism, accept your mistakes and have the maturity to grow from them. Show grit in the face of adversity. It is a sure way to grow and learn.

Until another time my Steem friends.
-Thomas, the hawksbill turtle @deepwaters
