Beautiful Chilly Watch Wind Direction Wednesday Thursday

We are enjoying a beautiful cloud free day on Long Island and the northeast. Clouds are well offshore from yesterday's weak low that passed to our south. To the north what appears like clouds is actually snow cover that was enhanced by last week's elevation driven snow event across Upstate NY & New England. We should remain in virtually cloud free conditions into Thursday but the warm up for Long Island will be elusive. In the meantime enjoy the strong March sun which will take the sting out of the air regarding the chilly temperatures which today will remain in the 40s. Tonight will be clear and cold with lows in the 20s to near 30.

High pressure which is the core of this chilly air mass moves offshore on Wednesday which any other time of year would mean a warm up. However it is early spring and the ocean water temperatures remain close to 40. This is going to make daytime heating on Long Island problematic Wednesday and to a lesser extent on Thursday.

Wednesday morning we will start with a northeast wind which will gradually turn east and then southeast as the day wears on. We will have plenty of sunshine but with the wind off the ocean all day long temperatures even in the warmest inland areas will have a tough time getting out of the 40s. We might be able to edge a little higher on Thursday due to a warmer start in the morning but the wind will be off the ocean all day again, mainly from the south and south southwest which will put a cap on highs. Temperatures should reach into the 50s barely inland but remain in the 40s along the shore and over the East End. At least we will see sunshine most of the day until some clouds arrive late in the afternoon and evening as a cold front approaches from the north.

Other than clouds and a slight chance for a shower Thursday night into Friday morning the weather will be dry through Saturday. We should see mid to upper 50s for highs Friday away from the ocean..near 50 on the East End. Skies should feature clouds with breaks of sunshine Friday. Saturday will be the warmest day with sunshine and clouds and some highs away from the ocean and toward the North Shore should reach 60 or so.

Sunday brings a slow moving cold front through with the chance for showers. The timing of the front is a bit questionable at this point as as the start and end time for showers. For now we will favor morning showers with slow improvement Sunday afternoon.
