Are hippos omnivorous?

No, they pretty much aren’t. They are herbivorous.

Hippos spend most of the day submerged in water to keep their thick skin cool and moist. But, they can’t stay in the water forever because they need to eat. At night, usually after the sun goes down and it becomes dark, Hippos travel on land to forage for grass. This is when they eat and grass is the biggest part of their herbivorous diet. They also may eat fruit if they can find it, but in the wild it’s not likely. Hippos are sometimes fed fruits and vegetables in captivity, in zoos.

BUT, there was a video on YouTube of a safari where two hippos were munching on a dead zebra that was killed by a Crocodile. I don’t know how much of it they ate, but I would guess not too much. Hippos can get sick if they eat too much meat.

My guess is that if they are hungry during the day, but don’t want to leave the water, and find an easy chance to, they might eat a little meat. So, I GUESS it would make sense to say they are omnivorous.

But, this isn’t usually the case. It makes much more sense to say that Hippos are herbivores, as 99% of their regular diet consists of plants.
