One photo every day: How does Ultraviolet lamp work as lighting? (208/365)

Hey!

Have you ever wondered if you could use an UV lamp as an external light source for photography?

Well, yes you could, if you don't mind one small caveat...

What you see is what you get.
Everything is pretty much red... :)

You might think you can change the white balance in post...

...but...


...you'll ultimately have to settle for pretty much black and white images!

(The second photo is the exact same image, only with white balance corrected.)

This is the stuff of spy movies with those night vision goggles and all. The idea is to flush the scene with invisible UV-light, so that only the camera sensor can detect the light bouncing back from the objects, and then process the image into white balanced format (or even one that's almost entirely green) that is easier to see with plain eyes. The original red image is harder for our eyes, since our eyes have adapted to seeing green and blue, the daylight colours better. Reducing all the colours and making the photo monochrome will actually help us see it more clearly.

P.S. Can you see how our snake Kiemurainen has created some remarkably visible tunnels and routes into its peat mixture. She did it all in the same 30 minute period I was in the grocery today. Cool! :)

In chemistry, we use the UV lamp as on one of the tools in detection of some organic compounds. This is because some of them are not visible to the clear eye at the visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum. Nice tip. You should have added science as a tag. IMO.

Well, am surprised you know some science. Turpsy has said what I would have loved to say but anyway, there's an element of science in the post. The UV lamps are very useful in science.

There's a whole lot of science behind photography actually, from why certain compositions work better than others (math, art theory and psychology) to how lenses work, or how light behaves in different conditions (physics), developing films (chemistry), and more. Not sure if I'm sciencey enough to teach people about those things, but I might try it some day. :)

Actually i am quite amazed that you made a red photo using uv light and then changed it around so it looked like that, i always trough night vision was a green light, i was unaware it was actually red light changed to look like green and blue, thank you for you two steem cents haha.

Looks like how on a submarine when they go to battle stations and it all goes to red light lol.

apart from the night vision goggles, this one also is like seeing through the eyes of T800 from terminator :D



very intresting!! our eyes can see visible light in a spectrum ranging from red to violet. Above violet is ultraviolet light, which we cannot see. It is also produced by mercury-vapor lamps,and that is what makes it used in the night vision camera

Yeah, too much red is hard for my eyes))
But when you corrected the white colours it actually started to look very cool. Photo started to give some peculiar feeling.
