One photo every day: I'm stupid. (194/365) + musings about Miro and figure skating

in onephotoeveryday •  7 years ago  (edited)

Oh my...

Okay, we went out to buy Leo some new skis, and when we came back I noticed this:

20180105_182938.jpg
Sheesh! They are both the same size!!!

The new pair (Peltonen) was exactly the same length than Leo's original Karhu skis next to them.

How on earth did I mess this up?

Well, good thing is the sales clerk told us the skis shouldn't be any longer than 160 cm for Leo, so I can just return these new skis and use that money to buy Miro a new pair. He at least needs longer skis. I might as well buy Leo some skates while we are at it.

Talking about skates, could you guys believe Miro (our regular tough guy) doesn't want hockey skates, but figure skates! Wherever I am going to get figure skates for him? They only sell girls' figure skates here.

Furthermore, all the boys' figure skates are black. And that color just won't do with our boy, he wants skates coloured like these:

roces rfg1

I know I know, it's an expensive hobby. @MarkkuJantunen's daughter Milla used to figure skate, and Markku told me it was a helluva expensive hobby for sure. That kind of scares me... Though, I'd only want the best for my son, and if he wants to figure skate, maybe he should.

I am not sure how to introduce him to that hobby, how to finance it, and all. Maybe I should let him figure out skating with normal hockey skates first and only then ask him if he was still interested in figure skating. (Or could that negatively affect his learning?)

Miro's kind of always been interested in figure skating, at least as long since he first learned the term "figure skating" when he was 3 years old. I still remember it, he asked me what the people on television were doing, and I told him "se on taitoluistelua" ("it's figure skating", "taito" means "skill" in Finnish, but we also call it "kaunoluistelu", "kauno" means "beautiful"), he thought for a moment, then said: "Minä haluan kanssa taitomuistella!", "muistelu" means "to reminisce", which would roughly translate to "I also want to skill reminisce!".

Yep. He really wants to figure skate... a couple weeks ago we were waiting Leo (from his piano lessons) at the Lahti market square, and Miro ogled at the people in the skating rink. A boy who was skating with figure skates caught his attention, and he decided he wanted skates like that. I still think it's kind of interesting, as all the boys his age here want to play hockey.

Anyway, I'm off to eat, can you guys converse about this while I eat a hamburger? :)

Whether or not a figure skating hobby will kill your budget depends on how many times a week your kid skates. Milla was in a group that had three hours of ice time per week. Also, there was three hours of physical training per week. The ice fees, the club membership fee, the skates and the clothes cost about €200 to €300 per month. It's cheaper than ice hockey because hockey players need all the gear.

"Taitomuistella" ... hah. They do sell men's figure skates here. But you have to buy them from a retailer who sells to serious figure skaters. You won't find them at supermarkets or sports stores.

Try that:

BTW, does Miro know how to skate at all? If not, you could get him cheap used ones first and see if he still wants to skate before investing in expensive figure skates.

I hope my son starts playing football that is almost free :-)

Until he joins a team... ;)

Oh no... boys should do karate or some serious sports to build their body and mind. Are you sure about figure skating? I mean it's not bad.
But...

At least I'd taught him few years of martial arts to strengthen his will and make one thick-skinned so he can learn how to encounter the strong.

But if he wants figure skating then... why not.
Just I'd try to make it properly and give him few skills so he will grow into strong personality with the unwavering look in his eyes. And he will be confident enough to try something seriously.

Well... what do I know, You're the dad of the year, not me, so... :d

Figure skating is a serious sport. It's physically and mentally demanding. And if you're the man doing pair skating, you will be doing things like lifting the woman up while performing difficult techniques yourself.

Indeed, very serious sport.
That needs a lot of willpower to proceed further and become something big :)
In the earlier days, I watched figure skating tournaments quite a lot.
How they dance with smooth and graceful movements... and everyone holding their breaths.

He did try karate but he wasn't interested. Leo has been doing karate since he was 5 years old, but he had a half year break. We discussed him starting it again this Spring.

Miro is also interested in gymnastics...

Yeah, I remember you talking about Leo doing karate.

I don't mean like they have to do martial arts their whole life))
At least get boxing basics. Just to feel how is it.
If one day I have a child. If it's a boy It doesn't really matter if he wants it or not. One kick in the ass and go train and thank me later lmao :d

A go player I know does mixed martial arts fighting. According to him, there are levels of seriousness to confrontation far beyond sports that make a huge psychological difference. He has fought under different rules allowing different levels of nastiness. Even at the bare minimum, there is a referee present and the opponent is not trying to kill you. A real life situation where your opponent is trying to seriously harm you let alone kill you is very different from sports.

There was an incident at the Finnish Parliament where a male MP tried to forcefully kiss and grope several female MP's. That guy is an alcoholic and a serious asshole. One of the victims was a Taek-Won Do world championship medalist. She was interviewed by a tabloid later and she said she froze and felt violated and dirty afterwards because "the ethics of the sport stopped her". But I think what happened was that she had never trained to fight without rules and outside the sport. She was simply not trained in resisting a physical assault in real life. It did not make any difference that she could have knocked him unconscious in a couple of seconds under controlled circumstances. In reality, she froze and felt violated and dirty like any other victim of sexual assault.

Miro is absolutely correct! Figure skating is definitely an incredible sport!!! That is so awesome that you are are so open and that you are going to fund his hobby - may it turn into something more! That is a TRUE gift, allowing him to develop and find his true passion! <3

I think that the child should be given the opportunity to try what he wants, then he will choose how important it is for him, before stopping on something important for him, he should try everything that interests him. You should only direct him and advise.

Well if it is so serious and he is so sure that it is what he wants, in the worst case you gave him a very funny hobby, and in the best case a competitive sport, as long as he does not stay in front of the pc all day , I think it's win win

@gamer00,
I am still thinking what to say :D Better you change it, why pay for something that you already have!

Cheers~

I have never done skating in my life.Being a tropical country we do not get a chance to experience it.But someday I will do it
-cheers-

better you eat your hamburger before miro eats you for figure skates :) it's an interesting game, tell him to wait few months to get them via steem profit ;) @gamer00

We had a lot of ice rinks before and many of them were in the malls. I liked ice skating, it was fun. I just was mad that kids were on my way and always had to slow my acceleration. When you do ice skating be cautious of kids, because they just don't care what's happening around and suddenly change directions. And you fall... :))

Ive never actually been skating so I’m naive to it all. What makes hockey skates so different from figure skates for actual usage?

Hockey skates are not built for figure skating. One can't do most of the fancy stuff you'd normally do on figure skates on hockey skates. And I would believe figure skates can be bad for those explosive hockey moves usually played in hockey matches.

But I'm not an authority nor an expert on this. These are just suppositions. :)

Figure skates have toe picks near the front end of the blade. They enable the skater to do spins.

And can most likely cause a flip and injury if used in a hockey match. ;)

Most likely, yes. Also, hockey skate blades are made for fast turns and accelerations.

That seems about right and what I expected! Thanks for taking the time to explain!

You are a very nice father..you think a lot about your son, what he likes..that is very sweet of you :)

Skating is very good choice..learn it with passion ..best of luck to him

If your son wants something and you can do it for him, do it
Snowboarding is a sport and a good hobby, especially if the person is fond of it
I think your son will be a hero someday

Hockey is a beautiful sport and needs a lot of training effort. In my country where I live, this type of sport is still rarely and not famous and I wish I had the opportunity to practice it

@gamer00 - Sir let him choose the best... He'll understand & you'll be happy... :)

+W+

Right @gamer00, contest and challenege should not give main priority but need to show quality photos....thanks!

Good thing it's a personal challenge, so I don't always have to feel obliged to excel. I can take it easy for a while still photographing every day, and then surprise you guys with a gem of a photo. ;)

yeah and i think you think about him to make him a good gamer there for first of all you must make yourself part of those games and then shows him your games and create intrest in his mind then he pick every thing proper and do every thing in these activities with happily and with own mind that thing make him a good man and a wonder player @gamer00
then sure he do more good as compare to @mila

Good shoes and good skating sticks . Be careful during skating.

Usually, when I'm about to start a very expensive hobby I prefer starting cheaper and then start spending more on it as I get better at it. I'm not sure if this works the same for everyone, but I'm more likely to get stressed when I realize that I'm spending a lot of money on something I'm not experienced at, at all. So I'd say, it could be a better idea to start with hockey skates and training, and then scale up to figure skates once our tough guy gets warmed up a little bit :D

Good luck to both!

Ice skating is my favorite but I do not have the opportunity.

great post @gamer00 about skis i love this sport game
