Chapter 1088 starts with another flashback. This time, the narrative is brought to the former Navy headquarters. Garp is teaching the younger Marine officers a lecture that would hopefully help them in the face of a moral dilemma. He gives them an example wherein an old man and a child are trapped on an island. The problem is that the only available boat can only fit two. Garp asks the young officers which of the two they are going to save. Koby, being a selfless Marine, answers that he will abandon himself and give the boat to the two stranded individuals. That answer leads to him getting hit. Garp tells them to abandon the old coot. He enunciates the importance of the new generation, especially the potential they hold.
Before returning to the present, there is another flashback. This time, it shows the interaction between Koby and Blackbeard back in Amazon Lily. Koby uses his position and offers himself to be held hostage in exchange for the battleship and all the captured Marines. Back to the present, Tashigi and the others on board the ship are already panicking as Pizzaro's hand descends. They've even prepared to abandon the ship. But back on the island, Garp's demeanor doesn't change. He still has a smile on his face, trusting that his subordinates can handle the situation on their own. After that, he starts to delegate tasks.
Garp tasks Koby to destroy Pizzaro's gigantic hand, while Grus is assigned to clear all the resulting debris. Of course, Garp doesn't forget Helmeppo. Helmeppo's task is to ensure that no one will get in the other two's way. With that, the three immediately make their move. Naturally, the pirates aren't just going to watch them enact their plan. They follow suit, trying to catch the three young Marine officers. But just as Garp has commanded, Helmeppo stays behind and buys the other two the time that they need.
Meanwhile, on Garp's side, it turns out his battle with his former apprentice is still not over. Kuzan recovers from their last exchange, wanting to take on Garp once more. But before he can even take on his stance, Garp knocks him again. Garp then proceeds toward Pizzaro's gigantic head and unleashes a destructive attack, cutting the skull-shaped figurehead into two. Koby also grabs that opening to deal with Pizzaro's hand. Just like Kuzan and Garp, Koby unleashes a very devastating punch, effectively blasting away Pizzaro's gigantic hand.
It turns out that Koby has also voluntarily adopted Garp and Kuzan's unique training. He often sneaks out to use the battleship bags until his hands peel and bleed. Doing this secret regiment on top of Garp's already grueling special training results in the young Marine officer getting covered in bandages, which is how Garp learned of his secret efforts. It's likely because he knows this that Garp is confident in Koby's success.
After Koby destroys Pizzaro's hand, Grus follows up by creating a net made out of clay. This prevents the falling debris from reaching the battleship. Meanwhile, Helmeppo comes to the falling Koby's rescue. He praises his best friend for a job well done and then brings him back to the ship. With that, they only need to bring back Garp. Just then, they receive a call from the old man. Garp officially declares the mission to save Koby as a success. After affirming Garp's message, Tashigi asks the vice admiral to return to the ship.
Garp, however, doesn't have the same plan as her. The vice admiral orders them to retreat from Fullalead immediately. He tries to assure them that he will find a way to get out of his sticky situation, while also reminding them that their success at rescuing Koby is a heavy blow to the pirates. Ultimately, he urges them to continue moving forward. He once again reminds them that all of them are the future of the Marines, and that's when the call ends. But when Garp is finally shown. He seems to have been impaled by Kuzan's icicle, while Pizzaro, San Juan Wolf, Shiryu, Vasco Shot and the other pirates surround him. Whether the vice admiral survives the predicament is yet to be known.
The chapter ultimately ends with a couple of narrations. The first of which tells how Vice Admiral Garp is declared missing in action after rescuing Captain Koby on the next day's papers. And the other is a foretelling of the next One Piece chapter's content. Emperor Straw Hat Luffy is about to face a siege on the future island Egghead.
