Song Writers Challenge: Week-7 (Right Place/Right Time)

My Process

Aside from a few key category modifications (and dynamic forks) with regard to scoring and awarding points to the entrants of the Songwriters Challenge, I am basically using very similar methods to arrive at my picks and honorable mentions as I do in the general Open-Mic contest.

To get a more in-depth perspective as to how I personally go about selecting my artists, please refer to What I go through as an Open-Mic Judge.

My Top-5 Picks in Order

Wilins Golden Mic.gif

GOLDEN MIC RECIPIENT: @wilins - “Amor Violento”

Okay, so I’ve been a big fan of @wilins from the very first time I heard him. He’s been holding his own rather well here in the Songwriters Challenge, and at the Open Mice venue as well. When I first clicked the play button after reading his lyrics, (which I’m certain that I’m not fully appreciating due to the translation factor) the first things that struck me were the gritty black and white visual followed by a most haunting persistent high pitched sound, which provided a riveting backdrop for his guitar intro – it was a persistent and unrelenting pitch that set the tone and remained embedded in the listeners mind throughout the entire song.

And then his vocal opening of “Na, Na, Na-Na” phrases began and just WOW! In between telling us the story of this violent love amid his incredible passion-building verses, he just suddenly comes out of nowhere with one of the most powerful and passionate chorus lines that I’ve ever heard:

"Yo que giro alrededor de ti.
Tú… no paras de girar
Yo que nunca te hice un mal a ti
Tú que no me has hecho mal.
Amor violento, lames mi hora y mi lugar."

The sheer power, passion, and artistry resident throughout @wilin’s “Amor Violento” left me no choice than to open the flood gates of my final Golden-Mic vote and shower it upon this tenaciously talented artist and fighter with all of my love and respect.

This is beautiful @wilin’s – great work, brother! As such, @wilin’s goes into the final round of week 8 tied for second place. Congratulations, man – you’ve earned it!

SECOND PLACE: @ausxen– “Right Place/Right Time”

In answer to what Austen asks at the opening of his post, “yes, brother – I’m still loving all of your sh!t!” The fact that Austen went to great lengths to produce and record all of instrumentation back-tracking to accompany the live piano and vocals for his song, simply pales in comparison to the brilliance of the melodies he’s created and the composition as a whole. It’s quite clear that my man, Austen has no intention of backing down from this challenge as he heads into the final week #8 in good standing. Great job, Austen!

THIRD PLACE: @ivan.atman – “Right Time For Us”

This fine couple from Croatia, Ivan and Ava, are new the Steemit. They’ve been here for less than a month and this is only their third musical post. I noticed them straight away. When they entered this song in this week’s challenge, however, I instantly perked up and took much greater notice. It’s a simple song reminiscent to my ear - of the late 60’s early 70’s. What took me by the most surprise however, were the incredibly pleasing vocal melodies and musical dynamics created amongst the two of them – especially in their closing chorus. I totally enjoyed this performance, as well as listening in on their little chat after they had finished. They did an exceptional job in capturing the essence of this week’s theme. Great job you two!

FOURTH PLACE: @stevesully23 – “Draw The Line”

@stevesully23 is also a brand new Steemian. When his post came thru on the songwriter's contest feed, I first read all of his lyrics, which I thought were quite brilliant. Thereafter, I was immediately curious as to how those awesome lyrics were going to translate into song. Well, I hit play, and was like, WOW! I was at first just really taken back by the purity of his raw vocal and guitar playing abilities but it soon hit me that he composed this entire song from start to finish like a real pro! As such, there was no way I could put together a top-5 list and not have this kid in it – he did great!

FIFTH PLACE: @basilmarples – “Right Place and/or The Right Time”

Ah, our esteemed Sir Basil… He’s done fantastically well all throughout this challenge, and I just love his persona and the varied music, melodies, and lyrics that he creates with that rather special style of his. I am also rather impressed by his support for the other challenger's as well as the community at large. This is one my favorite “Basil-Tunes” thus far. Somehow, he managed to literally use the “and/or” within his lyrics – I wouldn’t have expected anyone to do that in a thousand years! This song showcased a more serious and musical side of Basil in that he relied heavily upon numerous musical interludes to bring the whole thing together – and it worked just splendidly! Basil also moves into week 8 with a most respectable standing. Great job, Basil – you keep rockin’ in the real world, brother!
