Open Mic Week 40 - Killing The Blues (instrumental cover)

This is my slide guitar instrumental version of a great song "Killing The Blues", which was written by Rowland Salley, bassist with the Chris Isaac band, Silvertone. This is one of those numbers (amongst quite a few!) that makes me wish I'd been born with a good singing voice!

"Killing The Blues"

Written by Rowland Salley

Leaves were falling, just like embers,
In colors red and gold, they set us on fire
Burning just like a moonbeam in our eyes.
Somebody said they saw me, swinging the world by the tail
Bouncing over a white cloud, killing the blues.

Now I am guilty of something...
I hope you never do
Because there is nothing
Sadder than losing yourself in love.
Somebody said they saw me, swinging the world by the tail
Bouncing over a white cloud, killing the blues.

Now you asked me... just to leave you
To go out on my own
And get what I need to
You want me to find what I've already had.
Somebody said they saw me, swinging the world by the tail
Bouncing over a white cloud, killing the blues.

So nicely played, never heard the song before but I believe you just captured the essence.. The lyrics are so beautiful, even just to read while you're playing... What tuning is the guitar in?

Cheers. While comments from fellow performers/writers etc. don't (as far as I am aware) carry any extra weight on Steemit, they do to me! So thank you very much. That particular dobro is tuned to open D (D A D F# A D).

Ohhh so that's called a dobro...! I play a few songs in that tuning, my version of 'high and dry' by Radiohead is in DADF#AD, I posted it on here a few weeks ago. Keep it up mate!

Dobro is actually the make TBH, they are generally known as resophonic or resonator guitars. The other one I have is wooden bodied and generally tuned to open G (D G D G B D).

I must confess to not being very Radiohead savvy, but I'll maybe take a look at both versions.

Haha I was gonna say that Radiohead might not be your thing? It's one of their early songs though so it's nothing too alarming, just a nice pop song I remember from the radio when I was a kid. :)

I have always tried to give anything a listen and I generally respect things that are well composed/played even if I don't favour the genre particularly. 👍

Interesting...that song has a touch of New Mexico in it. I wonder if Rowland ever rolled through here.

I am not familiar with New Mexico so I am hoping that it is good to have a touch of it! 😉 I suppose there is every chance that Mr Salley has passed through the area at some time.

Beutiful sound, love the blues, im so need the soul @steelygeoff

Thanks for the nice comment.

Youe welcome @steelygeoff 😁

Very Nice Job.. Sounds Really Good!

great job

Cheers

Amazing song , thanks for sharing , you play so great , Blues \m/

Thank you for that. Appreciated. 👍

Yes sir! Fine job. Would be a great anthem to a movie. Reminds me a little of Dylan's music for "Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid" 1973

Thank you kindly sir, I only wish I had written it... I simply arranged it for the Dobro because I love the song.

Cheers

Yes it reminds me of the stuff Ry Cooder did for the Paris Texas Soundtrack. Very Nice atmosphere to it.

Very well played Geoff... Thoroughly enjoyed your skillful performance !

Thank you. 😊

Wonderful sound, beautiful lyrics! High respect on your Blues (yes, with capital "B") playing.

I loved this tune on your channel. Is this the wooden resophonic you mentioned to @clintjunior?

Hi there, thank you so much for the comment and the resteem and I am delighted you like the sound! 😊 Yes indeed, the Dobro I used on "Poor Boy" is the wooden resophonic. The one I used here on "Killing The Blues" is also a Dobro but as you can see is a metal bodied one. The latter being significantly louder! 🎧 👍

You're very welcome, it was a real treat to listen to that wooden dobro. It has a very sweet mellow sound. Since I saw that "Poor Boy" video I haven't been able to stop thinking aboud a sweet cover of "Sleepwalk" by Santo & Johnny with that sound :-) hahahaha

Big fan of the blues here! thanks Geoff!

Cheers Danny. I guess it's a popular genre. 👍

Thanks for playing Steemit Open Mic Night. Sounds really good, man
