Quake Champions is almost like Quake 3 Arena

One thing is to say: Quake champions can not be compared to other hero shooters like Overwatch. The arena shooter plays much faster and therefore strongly reminiscent of Quake 3 Arena. The Champions spice up the gameplay and give the game another tactical component. For example, Nyx may become invisible for a few seconds while not firing. That's enough to reposition yourself and kill opponents from behind.

At id Software, however, one wants to keep the individualization so small that they do not become the core of the gameplay. Therefore, all champions can use all weapons and use only one active skill. Feels like this works pretty well in the beta version.

The speed depends on the player

A core element of Quake Champions is the well-known punishment jumping in order to move fast. Basically, getting started is easy as players can already hold down the space bar to automatically jump. Nevertheless, the whole thing is still "hard to master", because fast you hang in a wall or turns too strong, which speed is lost. In addition, the "classic" Strafing with the alternating left-right movements appeared faster than the straight jumping with constantly pressed space bar. We were able to play Quake champions for almost an hour and as a result have already noticed a sharp increase in perceived game speed. If you like Quake 3 Arena you should like Quake Champions at the latest after a certain play-in phase - unless all sorts of skills are indispensable on a personal Black List.
