I was having a conversation recently with a friend of mine at a bus stop in Water Lines. Our conversation covered so many topics; but the one that struck me the most, which I kept chewing on throughout my later journey, was that of our country's foreign policies. My friend was of the view that the stagnation of our country, economically, technologically and otherwise were partly due to multiple faceted problems which on the top of the list should be our country's foreign policies. He believed that it was as a result of our foreign policies which to him was alien to us and must suggest anything in variance to friendly was the core reason why our country, Nigeria was never going to join the league of the developed countries. He said our foreign policies were to blame for never having enough energy to run a technological viable country as he made reference to the fact that most of the world powers if not all makes use of nuclear energy to drive most of their industries and have yet come to a round-table to ensure that other countries mostly African countries do not tap into that enviable energy resource with the sole belief that they may use it to create nuclear weapons which they themselves have pioneered and have stocked in their arsenals. This to him will ensure that these so-called world powers will not just hold the knife but will go as far as to dictate how the yam is going to be cut to the detriment of these other nations with his country, Nigeria inclusive.
I was of the opinion nevertheless, that foreign policies were entered into to harmonise and further strengthen ties with other nations of the earth to ensure peace and stability across borders as injury to one will be certainly an injury to all( members with signatory to thesame policies).
However, I felt rather strongly too that some if not all of our agreements with other nations in the guise of foreign policies should be reviewed and anyone that does not support our advancement as a nation should be rather scrapped or renegotiated amongst other things.
Our foreign policies should be friends with us and not enemies to us.
