Shoot an Orangutan Day

in orangutans •  7 years ago

A new study reveals over 100,000 Orangutans killed in Borneo this century, with the motivating factors being oil palm, mining and paper mills. Habitat destruction was long thought to be the main contributor to Orangutan decline, but the Orangutans are also targeted in large numbers by hunters for purported crop raiding. Last week an Orangutan was found dead with 130 shot pellets lodged in its body. The cultivation of palm oil and the concomitant destruction of forests is one of the major reasons for the decline of the orangutans, and the henchmen that due the bidding of multinational corporations so you can have your chips and soda. To combat the widespread decline, animal conservationists have now created rope bridges across palm extraction roads so Orangutans may safely transit between forests now fragmented. Overall though, the trend is still strongly negative for the plight of our primate cousin.

This makes me so sad. I helped out at two of the orangutan rehabilitation centres when I was over in Borneo - it was bitter sweet, such an amazing experience being with these beautiful animals and helping out for a week, but so sad learning their back stories as to why each and every one of them was there. Being told exactly what’s happening to their habitat and the poaching situation was just heartbreaking.

thanks for sharing your experience and your knowledge, that must have been an amazing experience

That just makes me sad...
