Original Glass Art: Cracked but Not Broken

in original •  7 years ago

This flameworked glass bead was an experiment using techniques that I learned from several brilliant tutorials and a combination of CIM and Double Helix silver glass. It took me two hours to make and kept cracking while I was working on it. I managed to heat and heal it a few times and thought I was home free but when I took it out of the kiln today it had developed several large cracks. It will have to stay on the mandrel to remain in one piece. The interesting thing is the cracks actually produce a prismatic effect inside the bead when it is held in the light, so it is more beautiful cracked than whole.

Flameworked Creation is Messy soda lime glass and Double Helix silver glass.

Nice, I'm always impressed by the universes that can be created with glass... You must have days with great joy 😎

Thanks! I feel very lucky to have found glass....my days are full of colour and never ending possibilities, it's wonderful.

Beautiful bead! As someone who lampworks I definitely know the awful feeling of working on something for a long time and then having it crack at the very end. I usually stick to boro for that reason, it seems to be a bit more forgiving in that regard.

Thanks, that's good to know. I've been thinking of trying boro. Besides glasses, did you need to get any new equipment to work with boro?

A mid range torch would be ideal since it can take longer to heat up but if you have that already you should be good to go! I'd definitely recommend giving it a try if you can get some boro, also be sure to change your kiln's programing for boro if you do.

I've got a Bethlehem Bravo, so I should be okay. I'll add some boro to my next order. Thanks for the tips!

Yeah, no problem! Its nice to be able to talk glass on steemit, I haven't seen too much of it. Let me know if you have any other questions.

These are incredible photos and the glass work is amazing ... It looks like a whole world inside there. Cracks are where the Light gets in.

Wow - this is beautiful work. May favourite so far.

really amazed

Thank you!
