Biking detours to work

in oslo •  7 years ago  (edited)

The public transport in Oslo works so that single-tickets are expensive compared with season tickets. At some point I grew too decadent to bike every day no matter the weather, and I also frequently have "downtime" when the bike(s) needs repairs and maintenance ... so every so often I end up on public transport again, and I buy a season card, or even a full-year-card. Due to the sunken-cost fallacy (plus that I enjoy being able to check up emails etc while travelling to work), I seldom bike when I have already paid for public transport. But on days like this ... May has been extraordinary hot and sunny ... well, why not go biking a bit! But I hate biking along the highway. Yesterday I tried out some new random routes, I spent maybe 15 minutes extra.

The T-sign is sort of meaningless for a biker. Sometimes (most times!) it just means that some few hundred meters down the road there will be a sign telling that it's not allowed to continue by cars or motorbikes, and often there will be some kind of turnpike for stopping cars.

This time too - first a sign telling that cars and motorbikes aren't allowed and will risk a penalty, then the turnpike. I has too big speed to get a photo of the sign, but I had to stop for the turnpike.

Well, I don't really see the point with the sign and the turnpike. Eventually I had to get off the bike and continue by feet.

I need to stop and read the map, but I don't have time for that, THERE ARE MOSQUITOES HERE!

Found a better road eventually, but a bit too high speed to take photos ...

Looks like we're getting closer to civilization again. Look out for horses! (no, I didn't see any ... my wife was once kicked be a horse while she was out biking though).

From that point it was just downhill until I came out to my regular biking route. Later the same day we got invited to visit someone in our neighbourhood, we started talking about biking to work. He said he was daily biking along that better road I got out to. Apparently I had passed a crossroad and turned right instead of left before getting onto the parts of the trail where I had to give up biking.

Sometimes you need to learn shortcuts the hard way, but I understand your point of not wanting to go along the highway, although it is probably the fastest route.
Next time you want sharp photos when moving try vocal commands. It might seem weird to say "cheese" or "capture" when riding a bike, but I've noticed they come a bit better in quality than the ones that you get by "pushing the button".

This looks like a nice alternative route 😁

Last year I cycled to work a lot, sometimes in 38 degree heat, 13km each way. Felt good though, public transport and these ticket deals make us lazy and feel like we have to use it cause we've paid.

Nice tag, #cyclewithme - I should use that sometime 👍🏾

Looks wonderful! Someday I will have to go to Oslo for the holiday - just checked and it is cheaper to go by boat to Oslo (from Copenhagen) than by train to Northern Jutland. (P.S. Jeg er dansker :)

Did you see my other post the other day? You can join me for free on the return trip :)

I did see it now, would be cool. I can get seasick but I can work while I am :) Worked as a fisherman for a year when I was young. None the less; the whole summer is booked with family stuff. Maybe I'll go in the autumn.

Men god tur :)

yes a lived almost 10 years in oslo. always biking u get a feeling over the city so easy then but a dont now any streets..lol so wen somebody say got to this "street" a dont now but a now how to get there. :) the same in the forest exploration for years. newer gps. its b\the best but take some time. nice to get some forest on the way back from work. :) oooo a can feel the mosquito bites itch..uhg..

I'm working at Storo, living at Grorud, I've gone via Solemskogen some few times, both by bike and skis ... but that requires some extra time.

Stovner her en del år. Fin tur der til storo da. Sykkel vei hele veien. Har gått fra stovner til senstrum til nachspiel på natta en deø ganger hehe. Fin tur det bare man ike glemmer hvor man skal :D

Stung by mosquitoes, off course, no time to look at the map -- nice "shortcut to work."

Very great amazing

Going by bicycle is always a better option when it comes to having to transport yourself somewhere: you do not waste fuel, you exercise, you can appreciate the world around you with greater clarity and detail, you breathe fresh air and you know places to which before You have not gone.

Excellent post, I really love it.
I really liked the photographs too.
