The Old Dog Announces: I'm Leaving Steemit!

in overload •  7 years ago

Tonight before midnight I'll be making my last post on Steemit! After that there will be no more posts or replies from me until Monday the 19th of June. I've been on Steemit for over a year and have found a lot of joy and success blogging here. So why stop for 3 full days?

It's Time to Clear My Mind.... But Just For 3 Days!

Our family is traveling to Italy and we will not have internet access while there. In the past I would have purchased a SIM card to use there but this time we will use the time to clear our minds and renew other aspects of our lives!

Do You Ever Feel Information Overload?

Phone calls, text messages and e mails, I get literally 100's of these a day. Add to this my Steemit hobby which includes steemit.chat and it adds up to a lot of information to filter through my mind. I'm curious to see how this 3 day break affects me!

Facts About Information Overload!

A survey published in the Harvard Business Review came up with the following facts:

  • Ringing phones and e-mail alerts can have the effect of lowering IQs by 10 points. Yikes!
  • Workers in fields of knowledge average 20 hours a week sifting through e-mail. That's a lot!
  • Information overload costs the economy in the U.S. about $900 billion a year. Wow!
  • A staggering 60% of computer users check their e-mail while using the bathroom. Hmmm...guilty!
  • A typical knowledge worker accesses e-mail from between 50 and 100 times a day. Mamma Mia!
  • 85% of computer users admit that they would take their laptop on vacation! Naturally!
  • Employees say that 30% of the e-mails they receive are unnecessary! Duh!

It will be interesting to see how I react to shutting off for a few days!

What About You?

  • Have you ever suffered from information overload?
  • Do you ever turn technology off?
  • Do you think that it's a good idea to do so from time to time?

I hope that you enjoyed this article about taking a break from Steemit!

Until next time,

Not without shaking!

You gonna just suffer those three days. It's way to short period to feel beneficiary effect. When I dumped TV I was suffer for whole month. Latter on was very relaxing.

Yes the dreaded withdrawal symptoms!

Happy to read your are going to be taking good care of yourself and take a breather, we'll still be here when you come back! ;)

Time away from Wi-Fi, Blue Tooth, monitor or TV screens is a very very healthy choice and allows your nervous system to slowly calm back down to a state closer to what it is to be human with out electromagnetic influences on your near pathways.

Are you going to have some times in nature to regain higher level of negative ions around your body, get your fill of real oxygen and exercise? All the best either way and looking forward to reading you again. I definitely understand, as you may be reading between the lines. Namaste :)

Thanks for your support with my self imposed break! I'm back and it was a good experience of spiritual renewal and strengthening!

Good for you, good for us all! Namaste :)

:)

First, it shocked me (Is @kus-knee doing same what Dan did in March, Oh NO!). But a lot of relax once I started to read. This is a very good article and all of us suffer from information overload these days.

Q: Do You Ever Feel Information Overload?
This is post applies to me 100%, I am sick of information load these days (specially since Oct. 2016). I am buried under it right now. 100 of phone calls, text messages, whatsup messages and then emails. Yes I start to turn of my phone or keep the ringer off and don't answer the calls until I check the caller later on or listen to the voicemail, it helps a little but still have to answer the important calls and perform the demanded tasks most of the times.

Please post your experience of these 3 days of relaxing and clearing your mind.

It is so encouraging to read about how others have handled the situation in their lives!

Dear brother @kus-knee, I am very happy to have you back with us. We learn from others almost each and every moment (sometimes good sometimes bad, so I always pick and choose). I am learning a lot from you and all of it is the best!

I guess you kind of scared people...you sly old dog, you...!...in any case, yes, we are constantly inundated with technological information....sometimes it scares me that we''re losing our humanity....it's a good idea to take a break from time to time and remember who we really are...

You bring up some good points. Thanks!

I was on a vipassana retreat last year. Which is a mediation retreat for 10 days. No TV, you give them your cell phone, no reading and no talking.

While it was strange the first days, especially I was writting with a cute girl on tinder the days before and really wanted to continue with that, it got better and better and the only thing I was missing was not the news or checking my portfolio, it was listening to music.

I was actually thinking about the same thing, since I am new to crypto I ll checked how much I was bleeding today every 10 minutes. Would be better for my nerves just turning everything off, for a couple of days.

Wow what an experience especially when you had a new interest! I miss my times in the Candian wilderness!

Dont wana miss it. The girl unmatched me but was still worth it:-)

in the Candian wilderness!

Where will I find those wild candies?

Blueberries?

have fun Old Dog
and hopefully you and the bird have a wonderful time!
3 days is very short - be safe!

Thanks! We're back!

that's great!
good morning!

Totally agree! I'm currently on vacation as well and obviously am not spending nearly as much time of Steemit outside of the eSteem app when on wifi occasionally. Love the unplugged feel and honestly haven't felt like I've missed anything.

It's interesting to read your experience!

Ive spent almost a decade in media. Eating and producing endless crap, and being swarmed and stuffed with verbal, written and digital info, almost 00-24, every single sunday. Fishing, mushroom hunting and hiking were crucial for me to stay sane lol. Also, getting rid of TV some 7 years ago helped a lot. Whatever you do, its crucial to have some time to recharge, to do what makes you feel good.

You give me a lot of food for thought!

i only wish i can format all 75mb of my brain, to get it rid of useless info :D have a good weekend, im going off the grid next friday too

Great idea!

I was shocked when I first saw the title, but after reading the whole post I realized that it is probably a good idea! I've never really considered information overload before, but I usually try to go out into the nature and clear my head for a few hours on days where I have to read a lot. I always leave all technology behind, except for the camera, and the phone in some cases (if I'm going for a long hike for example), but this is only used for emergencies. I really think this is vital to my well being after reading and processing new information all day.

You make some very good points! I like your strategy!

Thanks! The only problem with my strategy is that as an ecologists, I tend to find so many interesting things to look at while I'm out in nature, so I don't fully get away from it all. However, it is a very nice change of pace ;)

Enjoy your break...hope to see you back with a bang :)

I'll be back with a cool new contest!

Good Decision. Enjoy you're trip to Italy. Were waiting for your comeback.

Hey thanks so much. You're so kind!

Thanks. Followed You for More from You.

Appreciated!

Nothing Special.

Enjoy your weekend :-)

Thanks a lot!

You are very welcome @kus-knee :-)

Lol as soon as I read the title I thought: "Wtf is this guy crazy??!"

But now I can safely wish you a good time during your absence! ;D

Thanks so much. It will do me good!

I got scared you were leaving forever. Enjoy the trip!

Thanks. It will be a time to re-charge the spiritual batteries!

Correct! Have a nice time in Italy!

Thanks so much @sabine-reichert!

Enjoy your time off

I'm back And it was a positive experience!

Awesome glad to hear

First off, I'm digging the headline. It really got my attention. My first thought was "why are you leaving? Things appear to be on the upswing". Until you mentioned that you were taking a break.

I have taken a break from social media before because either I was too busy working on stuff or simply just needed a break. Either way, it was good to get away from it all for a few days and really focus on the stuff that needed to be done.

Come to think of it, I may consider another break from social media sometime this summer.

That said, wishing you and your family safe travels to and from Italy. Be sure to post some pictures when you return to us!

Cheers!

P.S.--You've been upvoted, resteemed, and now followed!

Thanks. It was nice to read that you have also taken this type of break!

Enjoy the trip, but hurry back. And even without web access, you can till take pictures and bring them back to show us! We'll all still be here, it's hard to tear one's self away, eh?

You're right it is hard to tear oneself away. It was an intersting and beneficial experiment!

I just bookmarked your page. I wasn't seeing you in my feed anymore and that made me sad. I hope you enjoyed your time off.
Welcome back! And have a Happy HF19!!

Thanks so much for stopping by.

Hey Old Dog, good for you! It's good to take a break once in awhile, especially from things that demand constant attention like social media. Burn out is a common problem and I think we'd all rather you be happy, healthy and refreshed rather than burnt out. Enjoy your few days off, you deserve it!

Thanks so much!

good for you, take a break, and have a fantastic time in Italy! even better, it'll be great to see you back next week, refreshed and more full of life than ever, and perhaps with some great shots of your travels as well! :)

Thanks a lot I appreciate it @alexpmorris!

The Harvard Business Review... There's the problem right there! What will we do for three days???

You're always funny!

Not to mention tragically good looking!!!

Enjoy your break! I drop off from Steemit and other Internet activities pretty regularly. And I leave my cell phone behind a lot these days, too. Even three days will do wonders for recalibrating. It will be interesting to hear how you feel about diving back into the Steemit waters when you get back! Have a great time in Italy!

Thanks for your comment. It's good to read that you also take breaks! Very wise!

I probably take too many breaks, lol.

Since your not using it for a while can I have your account, J.K. have a good trip

You never know unless you ask!

Yea it was worth a shot

Hi @kus-knee,

At first I thought you were leaving! Then for some reason I thought you were going on a Vipassana retreat. Then I realized you were not going to be on Steemit for Friday-Saturday-Sunday. Cool! Enjoy Italy and all the stuff you might have missed in the external world by spending so much time contributing to Steemit and engaging with fellow Steemers/Steemians. :)

Have you ever suffered from information overload?
Maybe, but not recently. I've put myself on a pretty strict Steemit diet: 3 posts, 3 comments and bed before midnight. True sometimes I do more but I really need to get to bed by midnight. My first client is at 5:15AM!

Do you ever turn technology off? Yes, but my internet devices are "on" more often than not. I don't carry a device with me when I go out.

Do you think that it's a good idea to do so from time to time? Variety is the spice of life! Sure, taking a break from the devices is a good thing.

Peace and love,
@doubletorus

P.S. Thanks for the reminder of using an attention grabbing post title and closing with an invitation for active engagement.
P.P.S. Have a blast this weekend!

Thanks so much for your detailed, engaging and interesting reply!

Ah, shucks, @kus-knee. Thank you for your awknowledgement. From my heart to yours. We make the world. :) And thank you for causing me to (1) re-read my comment and (2)correct at least one typo! lol @doubletorus

Technology is pretty controlling these days. It's every where you go and it is, in someway or another, connected to everything we do. Enjoy these few days away from it! Safe journeys.

You are giving me good advice!

God created the world in seven days; guess what would have happened when He followed your advice and would have paused for three days!

Hey, who knows what might happen in those 3 days!

Enjoy the break. Its always good to pause and breath from time to time.

Yes you're right! More than one year of blogging every day!

Have fun and enjoy your life on the other side.

Yes, the other side!

So far I haven't suffered from information overload, I'm kind of news junkie, can't get enough :) Enjoy your 3 days off and have a great vacation eh!

Yes a news junkie. I know the feeling!

i enjoyed your write up. Am tired of junk messages overloading my phones and mails, right now am going to clear all unprofitable messages that overloaded my device to ensure is empty for profitable messages like steemit.chat ...haha ...steemit is a spiral movement for positive change

"steemit is a spiral movement for positive change"

Good one!

So you're not leaving..forever? Good!

Never forever!

Dramatic title followed up by saying I am done.. for 3 days. lol

Everyone can use a break now and then. Not me. But everyone else.

(me too) =)

Yes the good old 3 day quit!

You scared the shit out of me! I really thought old doggie is leaving Steemit forever. Next time you make such a joke, you'll get a minnow downvote from me!!!!!! ;)

Yes I probably deserved a downvote! :)

Enjoy your trip! We all get "information overload" from time to time! Vacations cure many of these ails!

Thanks so much for having a look and commenting!

Hi...
I am here now, I have seen and read it, a good post and can be motivate other steemians. A great job, may you succeed with you.
Friendship greetings from me @rangga

Vote and follow done.

Waiting for your arrival.

Thanks for the visit!

I wish you a nice and recovering journey!

Yes it will be a renewal!

I read fast and i was thinking why, after i saw it was jut for 3 days, i am happy that is only 3 days that you are not here.

Yes just 3 days. We'll see how it goes!

I love shutting everything down and getting into the garden. Have a wonderful break and see you when you get back!

It sounds like you have things under control!

I quit Facebook to get rid of the negativity there. So now I read the news online to get the kind of (slant) negativity I enjoy without having to sift through political comments I find so disagreeable. I like my relatives so much better not knowing what they think about politics! I hope Italy is fun. Maybe you could share pics and I can live vicariously... will follow you.

Thanks so much. Yes negativity ... not good in social settings!

Enjoy your time away! I've been in information overload all my life. It's white hot right now with Steemit.

I've been forced into mini breaks for the last 4 or so days by life and thunderstorms and Internet connectivity issues.

Each break makes me feel a little anxious at first. Then it's a relief to do something else for a bit.

Italy can surely keep your family's attention. Hope you all come back renewed.

Your reply has some interesting experiences!

LOL it's called ADD ... well and living in the country.

Thanks for the article. Have a great vacation!

Yes, I have suffered from information overload. Probably the worst was from about 18 months ago, when I got too stressed from work and too much travel for work. Then I got dermatitis, I think mostly from lack of sleep, too much caffeine and a little too much alcohol.

I found that relaxing helped greatly with my recovery, as I noted in my Steemit post about How I got dermatitis, and recovered!. This meant reducing my time at work and my exposure to information, especially stress-inducing 'news', most of which is carefully crafted to get an emotional rise out of us. I never watch mainstream 'news' media anymore. It's just propaganda and other neuro-linguistic programming designed to keep the masses focused on certain topics to mould opinions.

Even in science, my profession, it's now absolutely necessary to filter information. There's just no way to read every relevant article in my field, and reading the low quality papers would just be 'information contamination'.

Sometimes it's just good to unplug from everything for a while. I went for a walk on the beach the other day and it was magnificent... no devices, no phones....time for some relaxation! Enjoy!

that had to get a vote just on principle! lol

Quite right!

Man that cat massage looks heavenly!

Thanks to those ringing phones and email, whatsapp alerts I have an Iq of 80 now.

Congratulations @kus-knee!

Happy trails. All things in life that a good and valuable are good in moderation. The Internet is a tool to provide information, make some money, or just a boredom buster, but in moderation. I make a post when I have a valuable content post that should be shared. I turn on the Internet when I need to solve a challenge. I never have boredom busters. This way of thinking may help. Thanks for sharing

Oh wow Awesom post :D
And i hope you will vote my post too, Thank's :D

Thanks so much!

Taking a break once in a while will do wonders to your mind. I absolutely support your decision. I find that when I go for long periods of time with a lot of things to do and very little time to do nothing at all, I become slow and find difficulty focusing and obviously become less productive.

Go ahead and take a break!

We will be waiting for you right here!

P.S. I actually thought that your post was about you leaving Steemit for good and I have to admit that I was disappointed and saddened by the thought. I'm so glad it's only for 3 days!

Great choice, sometimes you need to clean your mind and take some rest and after that 3 days you will come back harder, faster and smarter.

Much Love and enjoy your 3 days break

Thanks for your support!

You are welcome, and waiting for your come back and review about your break.

You gave me a shock.
I'm glad that you have returned now!

Enjoy!! Sounds like a great idea! The last year has been intense! ;)

It has been very intense. I've loved it but it's time for a short break!

Always good to take a break, recharge and come back with fresh ideas and a new lease on life!

You are so right!

@kus-knee enjoy the break brother enjoy the rest here If ya gotvtine take a sec to check out my music
https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@jimjam1210/hi-im-james-an-introduction-dj-musician-so-glad-to-be-on-steemit

Thanks, I checked your music. Great to have you here!

Thanks brother

We all need a break from all the clutter, the information overload, the likes on Instagram, other people's lives, and basically anything that isn't necessary.

You can take a break for a day or two, and mostly, nothing goes wrong. You feel amazing really, I do this a lot, as my work usually revolves around the internet.

Whenever the internet is down, I feel relieved! And nowadays, I have pretty much stopped using my phone. I only text or answer calls from the most important people in my lives. No one else, and it feels nice.

I spend most of my time on Steemit now! :D Thank you for this awesome post! Keep em coming! :) Have fun!

Wow, When the internet is down you feel relieved! Interesting!

Haha yes! I'd rather look at the world with my eyes, instead of looking at it through the screen of my computer! ;)

Yeah, i've only been on Steemit for 1 week, and my wife is already annoyed with me always being on my phone! 3 Days of no phone will feel so nice, good luck, and save travels!

Don't annoy your wife......it's dangerous! :)

As I read the headline I almost got a heartattack. But a few days without you I will stand through! Some days ago I also lived for 5 days without computer and steemit. So I could find out whether I was already addicted. Instead of blogging and surfing on steemit I make my big bicycle tour from Gailtal to Venice. Returned back to my computer I wrote some posts about my trip.
So everything is OK.
I wish you a nice time. And please come back with new thoughts in your head.

Wow what a great trip! You must be in great shape!

Thats exactly what I did until I just recently joined Steemit.
You can read my short post here. https://steemit.com/declutter/@raserrano/digital-de-clutter

Very cool!

Yes!! Taking a break is very important otherwise sometimes it leaves us overwhelmed..
Also, stepping away from phones and laptops is quite relieving sometimes! Enjoy you vacations and great post @kus-knee :)

You are leaving me more convinced!

I think this is very wise. In modern life, I think there is room for Faraday caged forest retreat time shares - no connections possible - to free the mind.

Enjoy your break!

That is a very good idea!

I'm full of it them... ahem.

yuup.
I try to avoid "busy" websites and I use adblocking software for that very reason.

You are a wise man!

thanx

Hello my friend, I welcome your decision !! The daily flood of information damages the body and everyone needs a time-out! I have this time out almost every weekend when I am with the family in the garden. Because there is nothing else besides nature and wilderness! And these weekends are always free of internet, it is grilled, bathed in the lake and bicycles driven! I wish you a good and relaxing time.

You are acting wisely!

Happens to me and happened yesterday when I just couldnt write. Took a break and im back in action! :)

Good for you!

I'm there friend and I've been thinking to do the same thing my friend. Enjoy your unplugged 3 days. Take care and enjoy the peace.

It will be interesting to see how it goes!

enjoy your offline time, it is for sure the best time ;) I guess most of todays society is way to much online and totally overloaded with information :/

Your username says it all!

Even the break is yelling at you ' hey man please take a break!' You have done so many for this platform and for its users and I want to thank you.
I wish you a wonderful 3 days break!

Thanks so much @the-future! You have done a lot too!

Buone vacanze allora! Io preferisco non abbandonare ancora il mio PC..... però ammetto che fermarsi ogni tanto fa sempre bene..

Thanks a lot. I'm sure that I'll be shaking a bit!

where do you go in Italy? :)

In northern Italy not far from home!

well, too far from Tuscany to have a coffee together then ;)

A few years ago I had a problem with my computer, and I couldn't work or play video games or talk to anyone online for a few weeks.

I had literally nothing to do, since it was the middle of the summer and all my friends were gone in all kind of vacations.

Since I had nothing to do, I decided to give a try to reading and I started reading a few books. I managed to read one, then another one, then another one. In just a few weeks I managed to read about 10 books.

Not only I discovered I love books and I love learning new things, but that was the most relaxing moment of my life. No distractions, no people to talk to, no work to be done.

From that moment I take a reading break for a few days when I feel like I'm tired of everything, and that does wonders for me. It relaxes me like nothing else, and besides that, I'm getting smarter!

What an intersting experience. You've given me food for thought!

You scared me there! Right up until the point that it was for 3 days. What a great idea to NOT get a sim card. Enjoy your time away and clear your head. There's more than enough to do while travelling and Steemit will still be here when you get back (I promise not to break it).

I really understand the information overload and think it's important to take time to clear your head sometimes. It's way too easy to just keep on going (I think we're all a bit addicted), but it's no good for our heads!

I want a vacation so badly. Get away from it all for a while and go see beautiful things. I'm definitely going to make it happen sometime this year :D

Have fun on your trip, I hope you'll have a great time!

Thanks for your support. The 3 day test went well!

That's good to hear! I hope you had a nice trip and got a chance to clear your mind :-)

We all need a break sometimes. Enjoy

You're right. I'm sure that your running helps!

I not look already 4 years TV... and it feels good :) I am like free, and I make and think this what I want :)

Very cool. TV can really rob a lot of time!

3 Yes's

Enjoy the 3 Day Break @kus-knee

Family 1st!

Thanks for chiming in!

Yep. I feel that way often. In fact before my trip to Norway I didn't have a healthy way of putting that into perspective. That's one reason why that trip was life-changing for me. I support your need and courage to take this break. Clear your mind and come back refreshed.

Thanks for the moral support!

Two weeks in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with minimal electronic interaction always works for me. A few day roadtrip would be helpful, but two weeks will have longer lasting effects.

Yes you're right. 3 days was good but 1-2 weeks would be a better test.

Where in Italy will you be headed to? My wife and I are wrapping up our Italy trip today unfortunately :(

I'm just glad I documented a lot of it on steemit so I can come back to it time and time again! Enjoy your weekend off!

So cool. I just left a message on your blog. We'll be in the North.

I think we'll be coming back to try and see more of Italy, hopefully soon! It's gorgeous here!

Earlier this year when I went on vacation, I also did not take my laptop along, I stopped for 2 weeks. I think when going on vacation with your family, it is necessary to concentrate on the family and spend quality time together. I enjoy steeming, but it takes a lot of time and will distract you from spending time with loved ones. Enjoy the break and have a nice rest.

You are giving sound family advice!

Ok so I was scared and worried!!! 🙄

Thanks for your concern!

I was saddened when I initially saw your post title that you were leaving. I am so glad that is only for a well deserved vacation. Enjoy. We will be here waiting for your new post when you get home. R and R great for body and soul.

Very true about the R and R!

@kus-knee, I wish you peace and quiet, away from the technology!

"Technology breaks" ought to be a mandatory part of 21st century mental health maintenance... it's super easy to get trapped on an exhausting treadmill. I always make a point of taking breaks... even when it's just ONE day I spend in the garden (I otherwise run two web-based businesses... so I pretty much HAVE to be online), getting my hands in the dirt.

Here's a story for you: I first realized the importance of "breaks" in 1996 (or so) when I realized I had been in a particular chat room on old fashioned AOL for 20 hours straight! Oh, yeah... that was when being online cost 10c a minute...

Have a wonderful time with your family!

P.S.: Great title! I did flip out for a few seconds when I first saw it!

Wow what an expeience you had spending 20 hours on line! You express great wisdom and self control with your self Imposed breaks!

Enjoy your break, when you get on line again the brain will have been in want mode, the first couple of hours everything will seem new again.

Enjoy your trip!! Can't wait to see your pictures, you'll share pictures won't you?

The only time I'm able to really completely unplug is when we go to visit my wife's mother and her mother's side of the family.

No running water, no internet, frequent brown outs, not even a refrigerator!

It is absolutely glorious. You see, she lives in a province in the north of the Philippines (as we know a 3rd world country), but not only that, it takes a 1 hour Tricycle ride (essentially a scooter with a side car), after the 5 hours bus ride from the big city.

On the few occasions I've had the amazing opportunity to visit there, I've brought a cellphone with me (strictly to listen to music in the evening), a few snacks for the trip, and clothes. That's It!

We spend the days having conversations with family, relaxing outside where there are rice fields as far as the eye can see, and in the evening having bonding under the stars.

It is the only place I have ever truly been able to disconnect and just be free. I don't worry about work, or what emails/calls i may be missing, I couldn't check them even if I did worry! I live in the moment. I take it all in, and I always have a bit of a feeling of dread when I finally get home and back to technology.

I hope you enjoy your trip to Italy and the disconnect, every once in a while a break is so refreshing!

safe travels!

Thanks a lot!

Fantastic facts on info Overload and it's fast becoming an issue for more and more people and businesses. This is why a flexible approach to both working hours and choice of work places is best for individuals and businesses in the long term. Thanks for bringing this to light..

I want to create a weekly round-up of the best posts to provide value to my business coaching community, and it would be a positive start to include this post...thanks again.

find your peace- i am following to see you when you return -David

Haha I thought you were going to leave Steemit forever, and was like what??????? :)

Oh Nooooo....not forever please ....but take a good rest ! You deserve it! I do the same sometimes . Just turn off and disconnect from the matrix

Have a great trip!!

Thanks a lot @gardenlady

Buon riposino! (;

Good post resteemed and upvote.

Hallelujah to that! I've been on steemit 11 months and have felt that burnout once and had a week or maybe one or two posts. Taking set number of days to completely disconnect is more efficient and impactful.

Enjoy!

Its interesting to read your thoughts on this as well!

sometimes you need time for yourself.
I think it will do you good.. come back regenerated and with full loaded power :)

I think that you are right!

I love this post! After 8 years working my tail off, I took a few days in Mexico. To my horror..the humid jungle of Puerto Vallarta was NOT laptop friendly - but oh so delicious for my psyche. I came back feeling like a new woman. Nothing like forcing myself to take a little disconnected relaxation!

A great title indeed, I wish you good travels and some time off :)
