Goddess of Winter

O cold and bitter queen
You whose sorrow every mother knows
For be it sooner or later
Her children always leave

O grey and ill-tempered lady
You who sought justice from Zeus
And were betrayed instead
By a father's decision

No, of the Winter you are not
For of the corn and the wheat
The barley and the rye are you
Goddess of the tilled land

But of the Winter you became
When the Earth herself weeps with you
And the skies turn grey in an attempt
To hide Zeus's face from you

In Winter you left them
The shining gods of Olympus
Abandoning all duty
To mourn for your love, your child, your heart

You dwelled with us, your humble worshippers
An epiphany of knowledge
And taught us the arts of cultivation
That we might survive your absence

And so, of Winter you are
Great and powerful Demeter
Goddess of the fallow fields
Awaiting your blessings once more
