I think @laputis and I saved a wild bird today!

After lunch @laputis said to me, "I have 2 more hours to teach, why don't you wait for me at my parent's apartment."

I wanted to wait for her in the car with the windows rolled up but going to my in-laws apartment seemed like a logical step.

At the entrance on the ground I noticed a little bird sitting on its belly. I checked if he was alive - he didn't move. I came up closer and saw one of his eyes open. I picked him up - he didn't move either. He felt warm. Good sign. Underneath him on the ground was a small pool of poop. I took his picture in case he died in my hand.

There is a vet clinic nearby so I went there with the bird in my palm. I said to the receptionist I found this bird on the ground next to the apartment building. He appears to be March Tit (Latin - Parus Palustris, Lithuanian - Paprastoji Pilkoji Zylė). The guy said they don't treat wild birds - only pets but gave me a phone to the Animal Care Association which might help. He also said they had someone bring in a stork a while back and the advice was to leave it alone unless it seems injured.

I thanked the guy, went outside and called the number. Nobody answered. Then I put the bird on the branch of a birch tree not far from where I found him. At first he almost didn't react but little by little he clung with his claws to the branch and somehow sat. The claws were quite sharp and long.

Then I googled the website of the Animal Care Association and there was an address with a phone number of the wild animal clinic in Vilnius. I gave them a call. A lady answered and I said I put the bird on the branch. She advised to wait for a while to see if the bird recovers and flies away because it happens sometimes. If nothing happens, I should put the bird in the shoe box and bring him to the clinic.

I went to the apartment, washed my hands and found a shoe box of my mother-in-law with the shoes in it. Then waited a little and went back to the birch tree. My march tit sat there without any change. I was about to take him in my hand again and put him in the box but he flew onto another branch and looked curiously!

Then I called the lady again and she suggested to wait a little longer since the bird showed some movement. In the meantime, I found a little spider and tried to feed it to the bird. The bird wasn't seem to be interested and spider got away.

There was a fountain nearby with some water in it. I found a leaf and made a container out of it and approached the bird wanting to offer him a drink. Even though he wasn't interested, I put the leaf close to his beak and he seemed to take a sip. Or not. I couldn't tell. The bird's reflex was to shake his head.

The grandma played with her grandson nearby and said, "If you misbehave, this uncle (pointing at me) will laugh at you..."

Then I called @laputis to school where she was teaching keyboard harmony and told her about the marsh tit. She said not to touch him because he might simply be recovering from concussion after hitting the glass doors of the apartment building. I asked @laputis to check on bird on her way to me and went back to the apartment.

I wrote there a couple of posts and after a while @laputis came back and said there was no sign of the bird in the tree. She even checked the ground. Apparently he flew away...

We packed out things and went to the car to go home but I checked the birch tree once more just in case @laputis' vision failed her. She wasn't happy...

No bird for sure.

If it wasn't for @laputis suggestion for me to wait for her at the apartment I wouldn't have seen this bird and maybe some cats would have gotten him...

Now I know what I'm going to draw next...
