I Admit that before I lived in Panama I had no Idea Cashews came from this fruit.

There is a juice that the locals swear by that is made with just the fruit. Marañon is high in anti-oxidants and vitamin C. It is also used as a laxative. I have not personally tried the juice but I would love to. As you can see from the image below someone figured out how to spice up cocktails using the fruit.

The Cashew Roasting Process.

Currently in Panama you can find freshly roasted cashews being sold by street vendors. Cashews are one of my favorite treats. Once odd thing I noticed is that the cashews are sold unsalted. I also noticed that each fruit only has one cashew. This means that tin of cashews in your cupboard took a ton of work!

That's new to me too, I love cashews :)

I remember Bianca telling me about this. I just couldn't believe it so I googled it. O the grief I got! "you never believe anything I say". lol. I love cashew nuts. But these in the picture look extra amazing...can't get them more freshly roasted I guess! Cool post man. Thanks!

Yup, we are men and know everything ; ). I make the same mistake.

For me this is unusual information. It's very interesting. I love cashews. Thank you for a fascinating and useful information @hilarski.

Excellent post dear friend @hilarski, never heard of this fruit, thank you very much for the information

Cool right? I thought it was very interesting.

@hilarski I miss tropical fruits more so harvesting cashews from the trees in my grandpa's countryside in the PH cause of this post!

This is really interesting! I never knew this...gosh never too old to learn!

Exactly, it is good for us to always be learning. The thing that gets me is how many fruits it takes to make a handful of cashews. Wow!

That is possibly why it's so expensive here in South Africa. Very interesting to read. Want to show my students tomorrow...maybe they know more than I do...lol

We grow them in South Florida too but not extensively. They always blow over in the wind. The cashew apple "fruit" is actually a swollen stem (peduncle) and the cashew nut is the real "fruit."

Not only does it take a lot of work to get a little, the shell is highly toxic causing rash -- it's in the poison ivy family. Even that smoke can give you skin rash and respitory constriction.

I heard about that but did not want to include it in the article because I only heard rumors.

Oh, yes I see what you mean, it sounds kind of negative. But there are also degrees of susceptibility. While it is true those resins are there, it is not uncommon to see little children toasting them on an open fire. Mango is in the same family and the peel makes lots of people rash-out badly, I have too -- and yet I peel dozens of mangos every year. It even has to do with how much heat and toxicity you are carrying in the liver whether you break out or not. I eat lots of raw cashews too. (lo que no mata, engorda)

I hope to be importing these not long after my business officially launches. Coffee, cacao, and cashews. It's a great trifecta!

I have friend that imports Cacao, Coffee and Cane Sugar from Colombia in Vancouver and does well with it.

I would love to bring in cane sugar, but it's a little too heavily regulated in the states. You have to artificially protect those U.S. sugar growers, dontcha know.

Enlightening post. I loved the pictures. On a vacation to Panama and Costa Rica I was fortunate enough to try the fruit. Amazing, strong astringent and some sweetness too. Cashews contain L-tryptophan which helps people to relax and sleep. A couple handfuls in the evening works for me. Are raw and shelled available in Panama ?

Yes, we can get all forms here since it grows everywhere.

Wow. Perhaps soon I can qualify and become a pensionado and experience first hand.

Over the top hilarity!

Disclaimer: I am just a bot trying to be helpful.

I hear that too, that the juice from the cashew fruit is pure awesomeness, but it goes bad quickly, so it can only be enjoyed fresh. Cashews themselves rock as well!

Have you eaten the fruit?

If not, you should try it. It's quite interesting.

I have a deadly nut allergy, with cashews in particular being the #1 nut allergy and put me in the hospital as a child. Now, until I can blissfully forget, I have to wonder what those delicious looking drinks taste like, knowing that finding out the answer would very plausibly literally kill me :(

The shell of that cashew nut on the top is quite toxic and can give you severe symptoms similar to poison ivy. Don't handle it, and you definitely do not want to try to roast it at home or indoors as the smoke is also toxic. I found this out the hard way and trust me you don't want to experience it yourself.

Yummy, love them @hilarski grown over here and an alternative to salted is using a bit of curry powder to spice it up.
