I think one of the biggest mistakes this pandemic was ever ceding ground to "natural immunity" as sufficient or equal to vaccination. I harped on this throughout the pandemic.
It was built on flawed premises from the start (persistent immunity from prior infection; lack of mutation in the virus) and not supported by the data from the start (immunity from prior infection was quite variable in contrast to vaccination). Not to mention vaccination after infection provided increased protection.
And we are now paying the price. Prior infection doesn't provide robust immunity. Vaccination and boosting remain important, just like with many other viruses we face.
As the virus mutates and immunity wanes being up to date is important for yourself and for your community. Make sure you get the new Omicron-specific boosters. Everyone 12 and older that has received at least the primary series of any of the vaccines is eligible.
