Another case of Polio in an unvaccinated young child in Закарпаття. The child now has paralysis in the legs. The sample from the child is similar to the virus sample from the Рівне outbreak last Fall.

That brings the total cases up to 21 in Ukraine's Polio outbreak.

For perspective, the 2015 outbreak had 2 cases. Prior to the 2015 outbreak, Ukraine was Polio-free since 1996 when it had 1 Polio case.

A Polio vaccination campaign begins February 1st.

In the first stage, all unvaccinated children under 6 will receive the IPV. Then at a later date, all children under 6 will get the OPV regardless of their vaccination status. The IPV is very effective at preventing Polio disease, but not as effective at stopping transmission. The OPV is very effective at stopping transmission.
