THE CLOVERFIELD PARADOX By Krist “None of us believed it was real. But this is the paradox: Particles interacting with each other, across two dimensions. Two distinct realities, fighting to occupy the same space, creating chaos.” In 2028, the earth suffers in a global energy crisis and group of six astronauts from UK., U.S.A., Russia, Brazil, China, Germany and Ireland went to space believing the Shepard “particle accelerator” can solve the crisis. Conspiracy theorists however does not support it for they believe having the Shepard aboard orbiting Cloverfield Station will create the “cloverfield paradox” that could create portals to “parallel universe “ that may bring horror and threats to the earth. For two years in space, their tests have been unsuccessful but eventually they achieved a stable beam but it overloaded and creates power surge, when they had restored the basic power they noticed that the gyroscope that aids the station’s navigations was missing. To add the horror, the earth had vanished from their view! They lost their connections to the earth. As they figure out and tried everything to aid the situation, strange things started to happen. One of the crew burst out of having the station’s colony of worms inside his body and died. They also found a female astronaut fused with wire inside the wall named Mina. As on one of the crew fixes the wall where they had taken out Mina, his arm was “eaten” by the wall and when they cut it off , it doesn’t bleed and he doesn’t feel any pain as tho he is an android. After sometime they saw the cut arm crawling as tho it has its own life. With the help of that arm who instructed them to cut the dead crew’s stomach, they had found it there, the gyroscope. They then locate the earth and tried to restore communications only to know through the transmissions that the Cloverfield station was destroyed and fell back fo the earth. Analyzing everything , they realized that they are in a different universe. Mina was a crew member in the space station in this universe . Ava one of crew member whose kids are dead in their universe had come to realize that in this current universe her kids are alive and she is not in a crew for she stayed on earth. They plan to reactivate the Shepard particle accelerator to get back to their own universe. Repairing the station to make the shepard work again caused lives of other crews , Ava decided to stay in that universe and planned to go back on earth with Mina but Mina sabotage everything killing everyone except Ava ( Ava had killed Mina) and Schmidt who reversed the universe shift and finally made Shepard work. They restored communications on earth and after reporting in , they eject themselves to go back to earth. With out them knowing that the earth is facing destructions and silhouette of a giant monster creates fear to everyone- Cloverfield Paradox creates chaos. Scientifically, could this be real? That the colliding particles at close to the speed of light can accidentally create micro black holes and possibly even larger black holes, leading to wild speculation like that in Cloverfield Paradox? Tho it is science fiction, the story has some basis in real science, like on conspiracy theories that sprung up around CERN and its efforts to find direct evidence of the Higgs-Boson particle using a 27-kilometer circumference accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider. The particle’s discovery was a big deal because it was the only one out of 17 particles predicted by the Standard Model of particle physics that had never been observed. The Higgs Boson is partly responsible for the forces between objects, giving them mass. In 2012, scientists finally observed it, calling it the “God particle” because “Goddamn particle” — as in “so Goddamn hard to find”. In addition to this, Vanderbilt University physicist Tom Weiler, Ph.D., has hypothesized that a particle created alongside the Higgs Boson, called the Higgs singlet, could travel through time through an as-yet-undiscovered fifth dimension. If Weiler’s hypothesis is correct, then it seems possible that interdimensional travel, as depicted in Cloverfield Paradox, could be possible. The reason the Cloverfield Paradox scientists were trying to fire up a particle accelerator in space is just as speculative. While particle accelerators take a massive amount of energy to accelerate their beams to near light speed, some physicists argue that under certain conditions, a particle accelerator could actually produce energy. Using superconductors, they argued, it would be possible for a particle accelerator to actually produce plutonium that could be used in nuclear reactors. So in a sense, the science of the movie is kind of based on maybe possibly real science. That being said, this space horror film takes extreme liberties, even where it’s based on real science. Even on the extreme off-chance that any of the hypotheses outlined in this article turned out to be true, the tiny potential side effects of particle accelerators are nothing like what is portrayed in The Cloverfield Paradox. What’s on your mind? ______________________________________ Definition of Terms • particle accelerator -A particle accelerator is a machine that accelerates elementary particles, such as electrons or protons, to very high energies. On a basic level, particle accelerators produce beams of charged particles. Particle accelerators are essential tools of discovery for particle and nuclear physics and for sciences that use x-rays and neutrons, a type of neutral subatomic particle. Particle physics, also called high-energy physics, asks basic questions about the universe. With particle accelerators as their primary scientific tools, particle physicists have achieved a profound understanding of the fundamental particles and physical laws that govern matter, energy, space and time. -In the Cloverfield Paradox , the Shepard particle accelerator was believed to possibly supply infinite energy to earth Question: Does the particle accelerator produce energy? - A particle accelerator doesn't generate energy. It consumes significant amounts of energy, accelerating particles to out-of-this-world velocities, and then smashing them together. Ultimately, the energy that is consumed becomes waste heat. As an example, the LHC consumes something like 145 MW extra power when the experiments are running. Only a fraction of this power goes into maintaining a proton beam with a nominal beam energy of 362 MJ. And only a small fraction (0.6% I think) of the protons in the beam are consumed in collisions each second. So that means about 2 MW. The rest of the LHC power consumption goes into cryogenics, support systems, experiment hardware, etc. In any case, this is all power consumed. No power is generated. In particular, whatever particles are produced in the collision are eventually captured and their energy dissipates as waste heat. - Victor T. Toth ( IT- Physicist) • gyroscope - - Gyroscope is a device used for measuring or maintaining orientation and angular velocity. It is a spinning wheel or disc in which the axis of rotation is free to assume any orientation by itself. Gyroscope consists a wheel or disk mounted so that it can spin rapidly about an axis that is itself free to alter in direction. The orientation of the axis is not affected by tilting of the mounting; so gyroscopes can be used to provide stability or maintain a reference direction in navigation systems, automatic pilots, and stabilizers. - In Cloverfield Paradox the Gyroscope holds the space station at a fixed attitude relative to the surface of the Earth. • beam -A particle beam is a stream of charged or neutral particles, in many cases moving at near the speed of light. There is a difference between the creation and control of charged particle beams and neutral particle beams, as only the first type can be manipulated to a sufficient extent by devices based on electromagnetism. The manipulation and diagnostics of charged particle beams at high kinetic energies using particle accelerators are main topics of accelerator physics. • Higgs Boson -Particle physicists have developed an elegant theoretical model (the Standard Model) that gives a framework for our current understanding of the fundamental particles and forces of nature. One major ingredient in this model is a hypothetical, ubiquitous quantum field that is supposed to be responsible for giving particles their masses (this field would answer the basic question of why particles have the masses they do--or indeed, why they have any mass at all). This field is called the Higgs field. As a consequence of wave-particle duality, all quantum fields have a fundamental particle associated with them. The particle associated with the Higgs field is called the Higgs boson. The Higgs boson is an elementary particle in the Standard Model of particle physics named after Peter Higgs, one of six physicists who, in the 1964 PRL symmetry breaking papers, proposed the mechanism that suggested the existence of such a particle , known by its nickname the "God particle," at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the most powerful particle accelerator on the planet. This particle helps give mass to all elementary particles that have mass, such as electrons and protons. In Cloverfield Paradox , this god particle that collides, creates black hole and opens portals to parallel universe • parallel universe - -A parallel universe, also called a parallel reality or alternate universe, is a hypothetical self-contained universe running concurrently with the prime reality. There are different types of parallel universes. Some are separate dimensional planes. Some of these planes are governed by completely different physical laws, while some duplicate the primary universe closely. Some parallel universes exist within subspace, while others exist as completely different quantum realities. -It is a facet of the astronomical theory of the multiverse- a hypothetical set of infinite possible universes including the universe which we live in. Together, these universes comprise everything that exists: the entirety of space, time, matter, energy, the physical laws and the constants that describe them. “DuckduckGo where Google doesn’t” 😜
