Do you want to have good parenting skills?
Of course you do. You want to help your children make the most of their potential, and you want them to be contributing members of society. But it’s time-consuming to sift through all the parenting tips out there.
These 15, listed in order from most to least important, predict a strong parent-child bond and children’s happiness, health, and success:
- Love and affection
You cannot be too loving. You support and accept the child, and show lots of love during quality time.
- Model
What you do matters. Walk the walk. Don’t just tell your child what you want them to do. Show them.
- Safety
Being a safe haven, give your children a sense of security. You take precautions to protect your child and maintain awareness of the child’s activities and friends.
- Social Skills
Help your children develop relationship skills. Build a strong relationship with your spouse, or co-parent and model effective relationship skills with others.
- Life skills
To pass on the basic skills your kids will need to be successful adults. You provide for your child, have a steady income, and plan for the future.
- Education and learning
You promote and model learning and provide educational opportunities for your child.
- Autonomy and Independence
You treat your child with respect and encourage him or her to become self-sufficient and self-reliant. Don’t do things for your children that your children should do themselves.
- Positive Parenting
Focus more on your children’s positive behaviour than negative behaviour. Reward or punish the same behavior in the same manner as much as possible.
- Stress Management
You take steps to reduce stress for yourself and your child, practice relaxation techniques, and promote positive interpretations of events.
- Gratitude
Raise Grateful Kids. A gratitude journal works magic- Kids who kept a gratitude journal were happier, more optimistic, and healthier.
- Rules
Kids need rules, establish and set rules. Show good judgement and stick to your rules. Never disagree about discipline in front of the children.
- No Spanking
Children who are spanked, smacked or hit are more prone to fighting with other children. They are more likely to become bullies and to use verbal/physical aggression to solve disputes.
- Communicating and Integration
Ask your child to describe what happened and how he/she felt. You don’t have to provide solutions. Just listening to them talk and asking clarifying questions will help them make sense of their experiences and integrate memories.
- Health
You model a healthy lifestyle and good habits. Take care of your kids’ well-being and make sure they get their sleep.
- Religion
You support spiritual or religious development and participate in spiritual or religious activities.
