The performers and creators, as well as the Olympic organizers knew what they were doing.
They're playing a game now to try to distance themselves from the criticism, but that's a cop out.
The more I look at this, the more I think they just assumed Christians would be too dumb to see the allusions being made to the Last Supper, but they did and hated it, so now they're pretending that it was always something else.
As a non-Christian I found the performance to be ugly, tacky, and not entertaining. As a creative director, I thought it was muddled and failed to convey anything interesting about the Olympic spirit - either in terms of bringing people across the world together, or in terms of celebrating human achievement.
But most of all, as someone who values truth, the fact that people are willingly allowing themselves to be gaslit about the whole thing is insane. They knew what they were doing. But they didn't have the guts to stand by their mockery after the fact. Weak.
