Creativity relies on knowledge recall both as previously existing basis and to prevent a repeat discovery or invention of previously known discoveries/inventions.
Creativity and knowledge may seem opposed to some, but they act in synergy.
When I studied, the most potent students repeated patterns which they were taught.
Yes, it is the bad method of academic pedagogy IMO, but the ability of these people should not be denied.

I even remember some kids memorized mathematics. When given a problem they were practically filling the blanks of some memorized syntax. Whenever anything new was given to them, they were at a loss.

Something new may require new knowledge, so it depends on the details of what was given to them.
I can describe 2 seemingly similar problems to you, one which you will be able to solve easily, and the other remains unsolved for the mathematical community.

Another interesting thing I've come across is translating certain sentences. A bunch of friends and me got a challenge and it seemed like a piece of cake at first. You can make a perfect translation if the sentence was slightly altered. But some sentences are just impossible to translate because of the ways different languages are structured.

It gets even more interesting when some letters could mean 2-3 different Phonetics and sometimes same letter can be written in 2 different ways (like Hiragana and katakana).

I agree that creativity is the highest form of intelligence, because from it you can make the most appropriate decisions according to the circumstances. It's a pity that the school in many countries, creativity is not stimulated from the classrooms.
