Looking forward to the day when I can let my hair go to its natural Gray.
My line of work requires years and years of experience. However you don't dare be over 35 when you apply for the job.
"We're looking for 16 years of experience." Okay.
Assuming I got my dream job directly after getting my bachelor's, that puts me at 41 years. Most in my field are expected to have a Masters or Doctorate.
So I keep my hair. And I don't allow one day's worth of stubble on my chin. I can so strongly emphasized with women who have to dye their hair, stay in makeup, and wear high heels, so they can look the men in the office in the eye instead having to look up from an inferior position.
Gender bias is an important issue, and I'm glad this is finally being addressed. But ageism is much harder to prove.
If you are not young you are not fresh and you're thinking is not fresh, it will not disrupt the world. An HR rep or manager makes these hiring errors because they weren't there 10 years ago and can't know the past in order to judge what needs changing. They are not in good positions to judge. But they are in position to hire. If you stay in the industry long enough to experience the problems of the past you also stay more current in your industry than those directly out of college.
Honestly, this is a rant more than anything else. It is way too easy for a hiring manager to say, "Eh. I do think they would make a good team fit," and not even be aware of their internal bias. They're doing their damndest not to be racist or sexist so they're golden.
