The real struggle of passwords and usernames

in passwords •  8 years ago  (edited)

So we have an email account, some of us have multiple email accounts. We have Facebook, instagram, twitter if you like. Then there's work email or intranet or other programs which require a login.

How many times a day do we login. Almost every website we subscribe to has a login with username and password.

Your bank. Your superannuation. Citylink or other road toll services. Memberships and other subscriptions. The list goes on with sites you visit, need to visit or have some sort of account with. In today's digital society online username and passwords is getting out of control.

Online security issues are the main reason for the need for logins.

Those freaky people, and they do exist, are out to get your credentials and identity for their own personal gain.

And no you can't just use one username and password for everything. Of course not. You need dozens of combinations.

In high school, a few years ago now, I had people asking me questions like 'what's your mothers maiden name'. These people I only vaguely know or rarely associated with, and I was wondering why they wanted to know.

Turns out they were trying to hack my Hotmail account, by learning the answers to my secret questions when you've forgotten your password.

What I find funny is that some sites will send you a new password to your email, if you've forgotten your password. If you already have access to the person's email, then you can quite easily gain access to the site and their account.

And we are told to change out passwords regularly.

I don't know about you, but it took me months to set this password to my memory. Now you want me to change it and start the memory process again??

And username, well one username will not always be appropriate for different sites.

Then not only do we have to remember which username we used for which site, we then have to remember the unique password we created for that site.

Now I don't know about you, but I spend a lot of time on my computer. I have a lot of logins that I use.

I advise to create a system of username and passwords which include letters, numbers and upper and lower case.

Or if you really struggle, have a notebook with all your login details written in it. Yes written in it. So when your hard drive crashes you still have access.

And you might want to guard that notebook with your life....
