My JOB is really cutting in to my Steemit time! - a #payitforward post

in payitforward •  8 years ago

I started a new job last week and I've got mixed feelings about it.

I haven't worked in retail since we moved to Florida almost two years ago even though I have nearly 30 years of retail experience. Honestly, I didn't think I would be working as a cashier ever again, but here I am!

Too new for my own name badge, I am called New Team Member

Not including orientation day, I've completed my second shift at Target as a part time temporary cashier and it is kicking my butt! LOL. First of all, I've been working from home for nearly 5 years straight.

Benefits of working from home

  • I don't have to get dressed.
I think it's safe to say that I've spent the last 2 years in my pajamas and really only got dressed when I had to go grocery shopping. In fact, my first year living in Florida, it might be safe to say that I've had a few NO PANTS days because it was too damned hot! Hey, I'm a New York transplant. It took me a while to get acclimated to this weather, okay?

And add to the fact that I rarely had to wear a bra...or shoes...or nice clothes.

  • I can take a breaks whenever I want
Need coffee? Need lunch? Need a nap? No problemo! I'm my own boss and I set my schedule.

  • Full time mommy to my fur babies
My two-legged babies are grown and all that's left are my four-legged fur babies. We nap together or go for walks. I'm available to them.

  • Steemit
I got to spend a lot of time writing, drawing, reading, and connecting with people here. It's really how I built my rep to 67.5 in five months.

Drawbacks of working from home

  • Limited social interaction
Sure, I might type up some witty posts and comments, but beyond an occasional Skype message from my kids, I don't really talk to anyone but my fur babies. We often speak in our own language: I use a lot of hand gestures and gobbeldy-gook sounds; they usually bark, wag their tail, and drool. I don't do a lot of talking at home and like anything else, if you don't use it, you tend to lose some skill.

  • Unlimited access to the fridge, the microwave, or the bed
Thankfully I have a little self-control when it comes to snacking, but I have no control over my coffee consumption. And if I'm feeling a little sleepy, I just go to the bedroom to rest my eyes for a bit.

  • What day is it?
I never really know what day it is... except on Wednesday - that's garbage pick-up. In fact, I think I may have "lost" a few months. I still can't believe it's five days 'til Christmas, especially since Thanksgiving was just...last week, right? Yeah... No concept of time.

Being immersed in a new culture

I think it's safe to say that until I worked here, I've been inside of a Target less than five times in my life. They don't call their shoppers "customers" - they're guests. Considering that I've been working in retail since I was 15, they've always been customers! But I keep getting corrected.

"They're guests - not customers, Meredith."

30 years of calling them customers and now I have to resort to singing this to remember:

I've got to wear nice clothes, a bra and real shoes. I have to smile and talk to our guests and I'm working on registers that appear to be throwbacks from the 90s.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not complaining. It's nice to have an excuse to shower and smell good. It's great to have a little income and speak to adults.

But it's cutting into my Steemit time

I don't know if this job thing is gonna work out!

Come frolic with me 'til the New Year!

I think you're making the right choice. I'm actually thinking about teaching again, at least part time. My son says I can still write -"Like it takes you an hour to write a story and less than a month for a novel." Yeah, but I'd miss all the fun of labouring over a keyboard. ( I two-finger type) It's the only thing that slows me down. Hell, I could write a story before, during and after school--that might be fun .
Anyway mere, I hate the downside of anti-social working from home and relating to virtual peeps. Always choose life and work in steemit on the side, where it belongs :)

BTW, I was told my pupils weren't students but clients. Yeah...the warden don't think so LOL!!

It's amazing how fast two-fingered typists can go! My father was a maingrame programmer and he was quite adept at the keyboard. :D
I'm just back from a short shift today. Mornings are killing me! I go to bed at 4 AM. I do not like waking up when I'm supposed to go to sleep. LOL
Going back to teaching sounds like satisfying way to fill the day. I've had virtual peeps for so long that some of them are more endearing than actual family members!

yeah, see that's the prob - you seem so real to me I think I've known you all my life...but I know you're bot - real people aren't that nice :)

I hear that! Bloody job is defmessin my STEEMTime as well! I had worked from home for many years and it is tough to get through the lean times, without a group of people to give needed support. However, the upside for me def outweighed .. I would love to return to it full time.

If I was offered FT I think I would definitely be conflicted. It's hard to say no to extra funds BUT I don't want to work so hard and put so many hours in that I can't enjoy anything else. Unforunately I did that when my kids were young...and the years passed in the blink of an eye.

I've never had to wear a bra to work.
But there was that time when I was a temp typist and kept getting boys from the mailroom sent up to my desk on ridiculous errands because they were eager to see the "new temp with a 48-inch chest" :D

My husband always says if he had breasts he'd probably never come out of his room.
::shakes head::
I don't know what to do with you boys. LOL

I know what you mean by Pj days and no bra days, its heaven lol Good luck with your new job

I think it's also safe to say that I'm working muscles I'd forgotten I had too. So far so good at the new job. Maybe they'll throw a 'permanent' position at me. A steady income is nicer than feast or famine I suppose.

A little bit extra will make things a lot easier. Hope they offer you a permanent position :)

I know the feeling and feel the same... I'm looking at the new year and looking at steemit and looking at the future like there's so much more I could do if I can just figure out how... I'm seriously considering just leaving everything behind to see the world but I can't plan for steem to support me lol.

"I'm seriously considering just leaving everything behind to see the world but I can't plan for steem to support me..."

You forgot to end that sentence with the word

YET

LOL

Maybe we all have some pie in the sky dreams about where Steemit can take us. I have a compulsion to stay active here because I want to leave the rat race behind! Heck, I've got my husband half convinced that my time spent here is going to be worth something one day. He's been looking at properties so we can build a proper homestead based on my passion for Steemit.

Wow!.. Yes you're right, it could happen. I just don't want to put my hopes up and sit around waiting. There's still the possibility that this could all come to nothing, I'm not completely naive. But I'm very hopeful, and I do believe in it.

I just think I should always value steem at what it is now - as in if I am to find a use for it, or create some kind of income, rather than think about what it could do some day - which is completely dependent on how it develops - what could I use it to do now so that I can quit my job and work for myself, spend my time and attention on myself. That's the dream.

We're not there yet... But a lot could happen over the next three months so I'm trying to keep an open mind to prepare myself with any ideas.

That is very true. It would almost be like making plans based on the lottery ticket whose numbers haven't been drawn yet. LOL
I'm just trying to stick to my goals here and work toward orca. I think that's a huge part of me coming back day after day. I'm challenging myself and trying to have some consistency. :D

It's definitely worth having goals! That's exactly what I'm trying to do. :)

Congrats on the new job :) I've shopped at target for years, and really like it. I've never worked there before, but it seems like a cool place.

It really sucks about having less time for Steemit though! I know how that goes. Between my 8-5 job, spending time with my spouse, and Steemit - it seems there is never enough time in the day.

I wish you all the best, and hope you enjoy your new job :)

Thanks, Tim! Right now it's PT temporary but they're dishing out FT hours for the holidays. I expect that will be cut back after the new year unless they offer a permanent PT or FT position.
The store is really clean and the people are friendly. The Cartwheel app is NOT HELPING my app addiction! I need an intervention for that too. LOL

:)

Congratulations for this new job my great friend @ merej99, with this new post will have many anecdotes to tell the cashier is the confeário of the people.

HAHA! I've already got a funny story...completely embarrassing myself. I may share that in a post soon. :D

Cashier stories are the best.....do tell.

Let's just say it is a personally embarrassing story and my attitude is: Well, now that that's out of the way.... hahahahaa

Can't be any worse than some of mine. One time I was working as an executive assistant.....that's important....because I had to be all fancy and dress up and wear heels....can you imagine wearing heels? I can't now. Anyhow, I got to work after dropping off the kids etc and got busy getting organized, walked into the boss' office for our morning meeting and looked down at the ground for some reason - I had on two different shoes.....both black, one paten leather full shoe and the other dull leather toeless. So I'm about as glam as a hobbit trying to be fancy.

Congrats, @merej99. Hope you are having a great Holiday.

I remember my target days in NJ. Besides the fact that they had me working the "no" counter (returns) where I saw some of the funniest lengths guests would go to to get money back, I enjoyed myself

I hope the whole having to wear pants and a bra thing gets easier, a pajama uniform is HARD to give up!

Oh my gosh, tell me about it! My husband works at Lowe's in the plumbing department. The "no" desk called him up because the customer insisted their water heater was broken. They tried bringing back their 30 year old used one.
I've personally seen people try to return nasty old beat up shoes. No ma'am, we don't sell "the grunge" look here."

I feel your pain and hope you settle into it all quick and start to enjoy the cash!

My job is frantic busy just now and I aint getting to devote the proper time to steemit I want!

I know, right?!? I think Steemit needs to get in gear and come out of beta...and make us all millionaires. LOL

Hahahaha I hears ya on that one!!!!

Yes, pjs is another addiction you'll need to break, if you want to that is. Maybe you need to create Steemit PJ's? Wearing a sports bra - sort of a cheater bra is good....and pull on pants is almost PJ's. I used to wear scrubs so that was like PJ's. Now that I'm retired, I wear my old scrubs as gardening, painting clothes....and then I have all 'round clothes - I wear them to bed or shopping....it's quite easy really. No thinking required. Which is why I don't know the day or month half the time.

Aaaand, just so you know....cuz I haven't said it to N E one.....I am almost at 62 and I haven't gotten to two months yet. Fancy pants are required now.

Oooh. Scrubs! I'll be in search of khaki bottoms and a Target red top. I'll need at least 5 sets so I can wear them FOREVER and no one will know I changed clothes except when they smell soap, which means it was bath day.
Here you go - a blast from the past, fancy pants and something to take care of my hairy toe problem - all in one! :D

I'm 62 rep that is, not age....even tho I am close to that as well...but when I just reread my last reply it sounded a bit off....lol.....I could go into another story from this, but I want to comment on your great idea of kakhi scrubs with a red top - fab idea. bahaha...re the Nair commercial.....it's so dangerous - it burns my skin right off.....and it doesn't work. - I'd rather have nicks and shiny legs than burns with stubble.

Good luck on the new job; hopefully you will get used to it, and will be ab;e to re-devote some spare time to Steemit!

Thanks @stevecoins - I can definitely work a register and play nice with people when I have to. The hardest part is actually having a schedule and being on my feet for hours at a time especially when I'm very used to my office chair and puppy-dog ottomans. LOL

maybe you could demonstrate a "floor model" foot massager while you stand at the register ;)

That's brilliant!
I might have to shave my big toe

LOL!

I heard that they have razors on aisle 3?? and not to be rude or anything, that looks like your whole foot, not just a big toe.....ya....you do need a shave.

this may be an HR issue. Hobbits lives matter!
LOL

They DO matter....maybe you should send some of your friends to protest that Hobbit Lives Matter - just at the entrance....no one will be too offended by that.....I mean, they are Hobbits. And THEN you'll get time to shave. But only then.

Congratulations ! At least its part time , haha ! Will give you time to adjust from your withdrawal from steemit ! Lol ! Good luck , and you still have lots of steemit time ! Happy Holidays! 🎅🎄🎅

There will be no withdrawal symptoms... i will go without sleep it I must!
70 rep and orca won't happen by itself! LOL We've got goals, love. BIG GOALS!!!!

Hahaha ! I love your style ! Yes Big Big goals ! Power on ! We will succeed ! STEEM ON MY FRIEND ! And good luck ! 👍😆

haha me too

I dream of a day when I don't need to rely on fiat!
And 6 months ago I'd have told you fiat was a car! LOL

wait... Fiat is not a car?

You sure hot all the pros and cons of working at home! If Target plays holiday music, I hope their playlist is big enough that you don't get tired of it. The repetitive holiday music of some stores would drive me batty if I worked there.

Oh my gosh - Target doesn't play ANY music. NOTHING. It's kind of strange actually. Perhaps they didn't get the psychology memo on the benefits of music and keeping your shoppers in the store longer? I'm not complaining - trust me - but it's just ... weird!

That is strange! Maybe there was too much dancing in the aisles -- or at the checkout, lol! Merry Christmas!

I hope they train you well at Target. They used to be very coupon friendly! As time has passed they have added their own rules and depending on which cashier you get, some reject coupons. I am not trying for you to feel bad or dislike your job just know some people depend on being able to use coupons. As far as whether you will be able to stay there, only you can tell. It must be hard from being your own boss to having to listen to someone else! good luck! :)

Oh my gosh, with the exception of being on my feet, it's a pretty darned good job. My store basically doesn't want conflict. If they challenge a price, they give their cashiers the ability to give up to 50% discount or up to $20 off without calling a manager. WHAT??? And frankly I love that I have no other responsibilities. "Oh, you want me to get carts? All right!" I'll whistle and smile all day long doing that. LOL

Meredith Sweetie, I am smiling and on the borderline verge of laughing out loud!

I understand your problem... My deep and most sympathetic condolences. I will probably do so again in one form or another, but a while ago I wrote about a similar problem here:

True Confessions of a ☁️Steem Junkie☁️,

Unfortunately, almost no-body (no heavy-weights, anyway) seemed to notice my post at the time. I guess they were all too busy dealing with their own Steemit addictions... ;)😄😇😄

@creatr

That was an awesome post @creatr - I just left a message. I may need an intervention after all.

Thank You!, and No worries, Dear...

All of us at Steemit Anonymous are here for you! 😇😄😇

Congrats on your new job. I understand the drawback too but all new experiences create expansion within one life ^_^

True. And thank you!

Sadly, in some ways it almost feels like a step back but if I was making lemonade out of these lemons then I'd chock it up to reliving a blast from the past. ;)

Your welcome, possibly but sometime it best to get backwards movement to be able to project yourself forward faster; Just like a spring or a slingshot ^_^

Yeah that sounds like a great plan! but only if you can buy the lemons wholesale from target :p
