The old testament explains to us that the spiritual perfection, the holiness, consists in the fidelity to the law of Moses and his holy covenant. God promises the chosen people the possession of the country of the Canaanites and Philistines, but for this promise to be lasting, the people of God must not mix their customs with those of the natives of the country because they practice sorcery and divination, which is in the eyes of God a form of spiritual impurity, the idolatry is the gate to sin:
"When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritists or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD; because of these same detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you. You shall be perfect with Yahweh your God." Deuteronomy 18:9-13.
It is important to note that the concept of spiritual perfection in the New Testament changes, it is no longer the faithful following of the law, but rather the adherence to a new freedom, the freedom of the spirit.
The spiritual growth according to the teachings of Jesus is to live the spiritual gifts inherit from God, the gifts are perfections: "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect", Matthew 5:48.
To be perfect before God in the New Testament is to fully resemble the Lord in essence, ultimately to be complete as God is complete.
