When oppression and deceit are imposed in the society, the first victim is the truth. And this is what the prophet Amos proved when he prophesied in the Kingdom of Israel during the Reign of Jeroboam. Amos was not a priest or a rich person, Amos was a person who came from a peasant family, but due to God's call, Amos became a prophet.
The prophets throughout the history of Israel were highly valued, in fact Amos gave a series of oracles in an important assembly where he denounced the sins of Israel against the providence of God:
"´I also raised up prophets from among your children
and Nazirites from among your youths.
Is this not true, people of Israel?´
declares the LORD.
´But you made the Nazirites drink wine
and commanded the prophets not to prophesy´" Amos 2:11-12.
But Amos was in the unpleasant situation of warning the people of the Kingdom of Israel of the dangers that were to come, it is important to understand that a clairvoyant cannot change the future using clairvoyance. The ability of the prophet is to know what is impossible to change in the future and what can be manipulated in the present to reach that immovable future. The prophets teach us how God's guidance acts.
And for this Amos suffered the persecution. The prophets were often persecuted for not saying nice things: "For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit" 2 Peter 1:21.
Amos was threatened by Amaziah, the priest of the Bethel temple, who advised him to go to live in Judah and prophesy there.
But Amos insisted on his clairvoyance; those who do not want to listen, for their sins will see their own fall:
"Now then, hear the word of the LORD. You say,
´Do not prophesy against Israel
and stop preaching against the descendants of Isaac.´
´Therefore this is what the LORD says:
´You wife will become a prostitute in the city,
and your sons and daughters will fall by the sword.
Your land will be measured and divided up,
and you yourself will die in a pagan country.
And Israel will surely go into exile,
away from their native land´´" Amos 7:16-17.
