Genghis Khan is undoubtedly one of the most successful military leaders of all time. As leader of the Mongol Empire, which stretched from China to Europe, he controlled the largest contiguous empire in history. Yet despite his great power, scientists say that Genghis did not accumulate his wealth; on the contrary, Karam Khan was a major factor in his influence.

"One of the foundations of his success is sharing booty with his soldiers and other leaders," says Morris Rouseby, a history professor at Queens College.

Jack Witherford, author of Genghis Khan and the Industry of the Modern World, explains that, unlike many pre-modern armies, Mongolian soldiers were prevented from taking personal spoils. After an area was occupied, every item captured by official clerks was stripped and later distributed to the army and their families.
