As someone who is still learning to cook and favors fried food too much, I get burned a lot with the cooking oil splashing on my skin when I get careless in dropping ingredients. Then there are those days that I get really hungry, I end up not waiting for the meat to defrost and the small bits of ice/water reacts violently to the heated cooking oil.
I used to ignore those little burns but found that that burnt part of my skin eventually bloats up (like there was water inside it) and it still stings a little. The worst part was the scarring or the dark patch it left on my skin - it was so unsightly!
It got so bad at one point where the back of my right hand was almost covered with it and my skin started to burn from the inside. It hurt even if I wasn't moving or doing anything. I tried some ice packs to cool it off but it never alleviated the pain in any way. I was searching online for any home remedies and I read somewhere that petroleum jelly can help.
Luckily, we always keep some at home to help with my LO's diaper rash. I liberally applied some on the burned part and I immediately felt relief. My skin didn't hurt as much and soon enough I could no longer feel any pain. The burn mark was still there though, and I had to reapply it a few more times and some anti-scarring cream - and voila! My skin looked as good as new after a couple of days.
Wanted to post this to raise awareness for those people suffering burn injuries and end up spending lots of money for creams and ointments when you could probably just find the cure at home :)
