The Day I Tasted the World's Most Expensive Coffee Made From Poop

Good day Steemians!

Today I will be sharing with you a funny story of how my friends and I have traveled all the way to Mt. Apo Highland Resort (a 5-hour travel from my hometown) with no sleep at all just to taste the world's most expensive coffee made from poop. Yes, you have read it right, made from poop! :D

The world's most expensive coffee is made from coffee beans extracted from civet poop.

My friends and I always had a zest for adventure. When we were younger, we usually have unexpected road trips to satisfy our wanderlust. One of the most unforgettable trips I've had with them was the first time we went to Kapatagan, Davao del Sur.

Back in the days, I was a digital homesteader which means I work from home. I was a virtual assistant, and most of my clients were Americans, hence I work on a graveyard shift (usually). So to keep me awake, I fuel my body with coffee.

My love for coffee started when I worked as a call center agent. Aside from the free coffee available in the office, our building was surrounded by coffee shops. Since then, I couldn't last a day without coffee and I have also developed a hobby of discovering great tasting coffee around the country. :)

One fine day, as I was browsing some of my favorite travel blogs, I came across a post about civet coffee -- the world's most expensive coffee being available at Mt. Apo Highland resort in Kapatagan, Davao del Sur. I immediately wanted to taste this coffee that everyone was so hyped up!

I dropped a message to my friends on our group chat, posted photos of the mesmerizing resort that served the civet coffee, and as expected they were convinced to join me on this adventure.

The funny thing about me and my friends is that when we decide on something, we must act on it immediately or else it won't be realized. So the next morning, even without sleep (since I work on a graveyard shift), we traveled to Kapatagan.

Kapatagan, Digos City belongs to the province of Davao del Sur. From Davao City, it is a 3-hour drive. In our case, we commuted by bus. From the public terminal of Digos City where we were dropped off, we rode a habal-habal (motorcycle).

Upon arrival, we were enchanted by the place. It was surrounded by pine trees and blooming flowers. From the resort, we can also see the vast green land of Kapatagan. The location was on a 1,160 altitude so the temperature was really cold. And from our room, we can watch the beauty of Mt. Apo, the tallest mountain in the Philippines. It was everything I have imagined for my "most expensive coffee" experience!

After settling our things, I immediately went to the resort's resto to order coffee, but it wasn't available until morning. So instead of coffee, we had bonfire and tequila! Fortunately, no one got drunk that night after finishing the whole bottle!

The next morning everybody was excited to have breakfast and try the most expensive coffee! And we got what we asked for, four servings of civet coffee for 250 pesos each. It was quite expensive but for coffee lovers like us, it was worth it! The coffee tasted really good, and the aroma was just heavenly! No wonder it is the world's most expensive!

The most expensive coffee -- civet coffee.

After drinking our coffee, I made a confession to them that made one of my friends vomit! Lol! I knew she was quite sensitive to food and beverages that's why I kept it a secret from them.

The beans pass through the civet's digestive tract, losing their outer layers in the process. They are excreted as poop now called as kopi luwak or civet coffee.

What we actually drank was coffee made from the poop of Civet cats or locally known as Musangs. There are several civets in Kapatagan, and sadly, farmers living in the area consider these creatures as their biggest enemy since these animals damage their crops.

A civet is a small, lithe-bodied, mostly nocturnal mammal native to tropical Asia and Africa, especially the tropical forests. (Wikipedia)

Because of this, some farmers have eliminated these species to save their farm. Luckily these creatures have found refuge at the farm of Philip Dizon, one of the local farmers in the area.

Dizon knew that civet coffee is known worldwide and sold at very high prices, so he thought that taking care of these species would only be beneficial for his farm. He then started to feed them with fresh coffee beans. Since civets can't digest the beans in their stomach, the green beans are excreted as poop and collected to be made as coffee.

My friend almost got mad at me for not telling her what the coffee was made from. But we all just laughed eventually! After our sumptuous (lol) breakfast, we headed for some great adventures that truly made our day! It was indeed a memorable coffee and overall experience for all of us!

Being a fan of coffee, I haven't tried this yet. I had an opportunity in Baguio but I chose not to have it because of the thought that it is a poop. But as many told me that it really taste good, including you, I am now collecting my courage to have a taste of the most expensive coffee. Lol.

Just an additional facts, this coffee is commonly known as kopi luwak and been cultivated in Bali and Sumatra before Philippines.

Thanks for your entry. :)

Thank you for hosting this contest Davinsh. I had really fun writing it. It felt great to reminisce good old times (well not too old) with friends. ^_^

Thanks for the additional info. I mentioned that in one of the captions, but it was too small to be noticed i guess. hehe. I hope you will like the taste of it as we did. Good luck! ^_^
