I am very much involved in deaf community being part of a sign language congregation, became an interpreter for a youth class of DSWD, and a volunteer in a vocational school led by DSWD. We visit deaf people to teach the Scriptures, as well as teaching them sign language because most of them did not have proper education, and never got the chance to learn their own language.
Hearing-impaired people are underprivileged. Only few of them has proper and decent jobs, most of them were unemployed. Some of them, though, are self-employed.
I want to bring them here, however, their way of thinking and understanding is different from hearing people. Only few of them can read and understand proper English sentences. They cannot construct sentences the way we hearing people do. They have their own grammar, which we call deaf syntax. So basically, they cannot understand what they can read here, and interacting won't be easy for them.
I want to bring and refer deaf people in Steemit, though it has its challenge. I am thinking of ways how to help them. I might help them to focus on photography and help them construct the proper sentences. Maybe, we can have deaf or hearing-impaired Steemian/s someday.
Note: Deaf communities in different countries or places vary. Therefore, my thoughts here might be different from others. Some deaf people attained higher education who might be very good in communicating with hearing people.

Yes. I would think if deaf people could write legibly ( which many can) they would do well on steemit. Thumbs up!

Sadly, majority of them were deprived of such knowledge we hearing people does.

I was a volunteer before in our organization and visiting deaf-mute students is one of our project. I am fortunate enough to spend my birthday with them. It was very meaningful. We had this activity where deaf-mute student will describe his/her dreams of what future he/she dreams of, and our Korean student volunteers will try to understand and draw their dreams. I'm one of the facilitators. Seeing them doing the activity made me realize something. People can still convey what they want to say without saying anything as long as people is keen enough to observe.
That was the most memorable birthday I ever had.
Bringing them in steemit is a good idea. Maybe you can teach them to read and understand some of your blog post and others. I know it is a lot of hard work but based on my observations deaf-mute students are very talented. They can learn faster than we think if teachers are patient enough to teach them. They are more confident than most people I know. Maybe you can start introducing them to steemit let them use specific tags and let them make one blog post. And let them share their creation to each other. They may not understand most of our post but little by little they will. And with the help of tags we can also recognize that the author is a deaf-mute student then we will understand their English grammar. If we are patient enough to read and understand, I think we can still understand them. Most of deaf-mute students during my volunteer still communicating with me through chat but I can still understand them. And we use English language. If I can understand them even if they are using deaf syntax, I see no reasons why others can't. Just give it a try. You will never know the effective way to help them not unless you allow them to explore the platform and experiment.

Wow! I was actually touched on your story. I have been involved in deaf community for more than 11 years, and I still loving this way of volunteering. In fact, the DSWD team always asked us to visit them because deaf people changes too. Patience is very essential in dealing with them. I learned about their common qualities which requires patience. That's why we're here to guide and support them.
@surpassinggoggle This Steemian deserves to be given a nod!
