Plato is author of many book: the republic, the banquet, phaedo. In his books Plato developed the concept of the existance of two worlds: the first world would be the world of the sensitive realities, that is the world of the physical objects that can be perceived with the physical senses. And the second world, the world of the ideas, the world of the objects that can only be perceived with the intelligence.
This approach of Platon will influence the scholastic philosophy, for Thomas Aquinas the world of ideas underlies the understanding of God, that is the ideas exist in the mind of God.
Some objects that would belong to the world of ideas would be the mathematics, the good, the wisdom, the truth. These entities are eternal and subsist by their own, that is to say that they are immanent.
The study of these entities constitute the metaphysics, the first philosophy studied by Aristotle, the study of these objects has a fundamental importance in ethics: among the primordial entities like wisdom or the mathemathics, Aristotle explains that there is neither corruption, nor evil nor falsehood. The evil exists only attached to the sensible objects, for example, the man is good by nature, we say evil man, a man private of virtue.
What implication does this have with love? Very simple.
When the love is directed to the sensitive realities this is a romantic love, affected by concupiscence, this is the love called "eros", the love of the lovers like Patroclus with Achilles.
When the love is directed to the world of the ideas, we have the Platonic love, the love for the science, the virtue, in particular the justice, the love for the wisdom.
The platonic love is very similar to the commandment of love: "Love the Lord your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your strength, and with all your mind", Luke10:27.
To reach this love that Plato calls it, in his book "The Banquet, "the love for good" or Agape, we need a spiritual elevation, an asceticism.
The result of the Platonic love is the contemplative activity and the highest form of happiness, the happiness as a state of the mind, the eternal happiness. This is the love proper of the wise, the love for good.
