Truth, and nothing but the Truth.

We live in a society where every day the concept of truth is underestimated more and more, for the common courtier the word "truth" simply means nothing, everything is relative, everyone has its own truth, facts and affirmations have no value because they can hurt the feelings. The simple fact that IQ is generally higher in general terms depending on race (To confirm this I invite you to read The Bell Curve), simply makes you a racist. Relying on statistics to support an argument today has no value because it can "hurt people" and here I would like to quote President Truman:

I never gave anybody hell - I just told them the truth and they thought it was hell.

People think that truth is hell, nobody likes the truth, truth can hurt but it also helps to heal and to stand up against the adversities even stronger, but we are going through the wrong path, we have developed the wrong concept of relative truth because nobody can’t stand truth anymore.

Post-truth and relativistic epistemology are two concepts that are aggravating our society to the point of making us involute. Let's start by defining these two concepts first.

The Post-Truth

It is mainly the deliberate distortion of reality, i.e. any information or assertion that is not based on objective facts but appeals to the emotions, beliefs or desires of the public, which is deeply rooted in our society.

Relativistic epistemology

It is the basic idea that there is no such thing as the universal truth about the world, only different ways of interpreting it. This concept dates back to ancient Greece and is coined by Protagoras, who said:

Man is the measure of all things.

These two concepts are also captured by new contemporary ideas:

  • What you believe is true (for you); what I believe is true (for me).
  • Truth is subjective.
  • The truth is in the eye of the beholder.
  • Different styles for different people.
  • You have your beliefs; I have mine, and that's it.

These ideas are more than ever present in our society and end up destabilizing it. Given that if everyone is right and there is no such thing as absolute truth, everything should be permitted, from the most radical wing of any realm, from tyranny to the most despot communism. This kind of pro-relativistic rhetoric simply legitimizes all those minorities who end up affecting us all, as is well known in the case of the Social Justice Warriors, the politically correct, third-wave feminists and groups like Black Live Matters who, instead of fighting for a just cause, fight for more privileges than ordinary people and end up creating polarization in our society.

The media is aware of these situations. For those who don't know, 90% of the media is controlled by 6 corporations, so most of these media have their own interests, and this is where the battle against fake news comes in. Today, the certain news is given more importance than others, such as the global focus of the Venezuelan case in the media, leaving aside atrocities, human rights violations and crimes against humanity, which often occur in other countries such as Honduras, El Salvador, and Mexico.

To this we must add the great influence of social networks that make us more and more manipulable and controllable, for those who do not know it, social networks can serve as a method of control, where organizations can obtain information about our tastes in order to manipulate us. We already have the case of Cambridge Analytica and its influence in the last elections in the United States. They also contribute to making us dumb, the average courtier takes for granted what pages like pictoline or playground say, have you ever questioned them? Or have you taken it for granted because they have a more attractive packaging and a more eye-catching type of approach to the audience? and whose information is presented in a credible (not to say true) way, so we take all this information as true without even questioning it, most of the time the source from which the information was taken was manipulated and used for its own purpose.

This leads us to create a bubble of reality and therefore to conclude that there are diverse truths and nothing like absolute truth, the media simply distort reality virtually to the point of making us advocate for epistemological relativism. Networks make us lose our ability to discern between what is true and what. These two elements have been the vehicles for promoting postruth and relativistic epistemology.

We have built a society, through both concepts of truth and freedom, we cannot have one without the other. We have to fight for these eternal and universal concepts to be preserved until the end of time, and the only way to win this battle is to be educated and always defend the truth, as much as you would defend your parents..

Only the truth will set you free.

“Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing ever happened.” ― Winston S. Churchill

and then the question is what are they planning to do (the media corporations) with the fake news? truth also is that facism doesn't exist in this world other than in north korea.. that is fact but those antifa gutmensches act only in country\s where there is absolutely no single form of facism findable anywhere like the western first world, who is all about acting in a way other approve your behavior... and with that censor yourself and others when they say something controversial.. that is the truth about the world we live in, from my perspective as objective pov and first hand experiences... good article but you cannot really judge or give a proper insight of it unless you first hand experience it i think its the same for those who seem to know all about your country.. since the sources are very little when it comes t actual truth that is objective like water is wet at roomtemperature but room temperature in an iglo may be below zero and at the equador room temperatuur may be 50 celcius or something ;)

true^^

Hegel's thesis-antithesis-synthesis triad, in which contradictions are seen as partial truths synthesized in one absolute, non-contradictory whole, paved the way for today's postmodernist thinkers who generally argue that truth is contingent on historical and social context rather than absolute.

I agree that this relativistic epistemology continues to play a significant role in destabilizing our society, and traditional/social media as well as our education system accelerate the spread of such destructive ideas.

Recently, moral psychologist and author Jonathan Haidt gave a brilliant lecture at Duke University entitled Why Universities Must Choose One Telos: Truth or Social Justice. His argument is obviously directed toward academia but, as your case demonstrates, also translates to broader society: We must once again embrace truth as the highest and inviolable good.

this is an interesting post

A very good post, sir.
I'm doing something regarding the IQ bell curve (to a degree), at the moment.
I did some posts a ways back on the IQ bell curve , race, etc.
You know, those factual things - caused a commotion....

Team truth takes all members who hold the ideal, thanks for helping get that message out. It's awful that this is where we have to be in philosophy, if we keep fighting for what's right we can move past it though I'm sure.
