How to get out From the circle of absurdity. Part-2

in philosophy •  7 years ago

Absurd means purposeless and the unresolved purpose of life has been chasing human being from birth to death. As Sisyphus did. The king from Greek mythology represents the great example of absurdity. Albert Camus in his book “The Myth of Sisyphus” explains how absurdity impacts on our life and how to deal with it. Centring this issue he brings Sisyphus life as an example. In Greek Mythology Sisyphus, the prominent king and founder of Ephyra city was in same time an emblem of absurd hero, got punishment for bunch of crime expose hostility to god and society, for instance impregnates his niece, plots to kill his own brother, betrays the secrets of god and even tactfully chains Thanatos ,the god of death. After a prolong time, acknowledging that thanatos was released by Ares and coming to fetch Sisyphus up he asked his wife to throw his body in the courtyard when he died without burying it. While he was in underworld he complained to the queen of underworld that his wife was disrespectful to him did not get proper burial so he begged to return in world so that he could punish his disrespectful wife. Once sisyphus was back he indulged himself again in the amusement of earth’s beauty that incites Zeus to give him a terrible penalty. He was condemned to roll a rock ceaselessly from zenith to the apex of mountain . To Camus this myth is tragic because the hero is conscious and he says:

It is during that return, that pause, that Sisyphus interests me. A face that toils so close to stones is already stone itself! I see that man going back down with a heavy yet measured step toward the torment of which he will never know the end. That hour like a breathing space which returns as surely as his suffering, that is the hour of consciousness.”( Camus, 24 )

Knowing that this is an absurd work, Sisyphus had nothing to do, every time he goes up pulling the rock against the mountain. Instead of everything he is happy as he never gave up his hope and accepted his life the way it is because he knew happiness and absurd are gifts of earth. Unlike Camus it can be said “one must imagine Sisyphus happy”
