The Right And The Left Are Both Hypocrites When It Comes To Arguments Of Free Speech

in philosophy •  7 years ago

I haven't really been in support of any protest movement that involves holding signs and begging the government to do things, especially since Trump came to office because none of these protests are about war. surveillance, or the police state, its all about his "dirty mouth."

However, the recent women's march and many of the criticisms against it has me scratching my head a bit, and I see both sides of this argument as being hypocritical about the issue of "free speech."

The conservatives and Trumpers have been yammering on and on about free speech because they are upset that their racism is being rejected by society at large and thus "free speech" has become the centerpiece of their platform. Yet, I sign on the internet and see all of these conservative Trump supporters bashing the women's march because they used profanity and sexual language around children. It is massively hypocritical to criticise the march for these reasons, and personally, while I disagreed with many aspects of the march and the goals behind it, I strongly supported that part of it, because we live in a square ass sexually repressed culture. However, I did find it strange that these were the same people who have been criticizing Trump's "dirty mouth" every day for the past year.

The left does the same thing too, they claim that Trump is not "presidential" (whatever that means) because he uses profanity and has been known to use the services of sex workers, meanwhile, they call for the liberation of sex workers (as they should) and use the same profanity themselves.

People want free speech for themselves, but not for anyone else, even when it comes to the same issues or same type of speech.

Racism is a more complicated topic because it involves veiled threats, which walk a thin line when it comes to free speech, but with sexuality and profanity, people are OK with using that type of speech or expression themselves, but then gasp when their enemies do the same.

“I was once asked why I don't participate in anti-war demonstrations. I said that I will never do that, but as soon as you have a pro-peace rally, I'll be there.”

Great article John. You nailed when you said, "because we live in a square ass sexually repressed culture". People at street level as now so scared to even speak to each other in fear of being controversial or offensive and it's not healthy, not healthy at all. Let's be natural human being and get it all out on the table for fuck's sake! I stayed in an AirBnB last night in a house and there were several strangers sitting around in a kitchen area and nobody talks. People are afraid to ask questions. And I wonder if millennials are even capable of having a normal conversation.

holding signs and begging the government to do things

Perfect. I find it very disturbing that signs, marches, rallies, are supposed to showcase "speaking truth to power" while at the same time broadcasting to the world how powerless we are through the act of begging. There is something very similar to the cardboard signs homeless people hold and that which protesters hold. If we want change, we should be boycotting and forming self governing communities that set their own rules and offer a competing model.

Love this. It is mind boggling the paradigm we're in. I'm clueless as to why we have these 2 polarized sides.. love the pic there is only one side. Here's to hoping people may realize they're fighting the wrong battle..
Really like this point you made:

none of these protests are about war. surveillance, or the police state, its all about his "dirty mouth."
