Why I chose the Transhumanists as a culture:
I had looked into each topic offered in turn, and came up with several others, but I wanted to find a people so marginalized that they were not even a “people.” Sihks, Christian Indians, Scientologists, and others, all seemed like good avenues at first, but Transhumanism is either ubiquitous as I am beginning to think, or humans are to evolve biologically without technology which also includes the fact of extinction; basically stating “We are in Our Final Stage.” I was attracted to it when I found out if was not a mere literary genre, but also that it promises a different future; dark or bright. I have seen how we are changing because of technology and if you look you will see it too.
I can clearly recollect my father’s telephone number, it is the house I grew up in and a number I learned probably first. Not weird, but I can also remember my first girlfriends telephone number and my deceased great-grandfather’s telephone number, as well as Pepe’s Pizza: 410-377-3287. Yet I cannot right now recall the number to my 11-year-old son’s flip phone and I still have trouble with my year-old land line, since I hardly ever use it. I have made it a discipline to remember 10 or more numbers, but the facility has been replaced by technology as I have many numbers on my cell, backed up to the “cloud” and can google a website then just touch the picture of a phone and talk. Interesting fact: You can still “Call Time”, my 11-year-old thought I was joking so we did it. Why didn’t he believe me? Because your phone has the exact time on it already. We are definitely losing something here, but I believe we may be making gains, perhaps making gains whilst suffering mere latencies or growing pains. Before I form a fuller opinion, I will get back to the original assignment of learning. I would actually say I learned “Weird” things.
