Welcome to Humans of Star Trek, a daily Star Trek inspired motivation series.
These are the voyages of Starfleet personnel who came together to give us a future that humanity craves for and deserves. Together, let's boldly go where no one has gone before.
Kathryn Janeway was the Captain of the USS Voyager and became the first Captain of the United Federation of Planets to successfully traverse the Delta Quadrant.
Before donning the captain's hat Janeway was a science officer and her attention to detail had a lot to do with her background in science. While she came across as a strict leader she was always kind and considerate towards her crew. She was welcoming of other cultures and species which is why Neelix and Kes found a home aboard the Voyager. She even helped a ruthless Borg - Seven of Nine - find her lost humanity. Even when other crew members and Seven herself couldn't trust Seven's Borg Collective instincts, Janeway believed in her and gave her numerous opportunities to reclaim her humanity.
This mixture of strictness, kindness, calculated moves, and faith of the heart made Janeway a brilliant leader. This quote about using logic and its implications highlights Janeway's intellectual prowess. She recognizes that logic can be used to justify almost anything and therefore all applications of logic must first be met with healthy skepticism before one can trust that the logical inference will lead not just to the desired result but to the right result.
Captain Janeway is a great role model to everyone who aspires to be a leader of people.
I try to focus on the characters that made Star Trek great and don't usually mention the name of actual actors in this series but I will make an exception today because Kathryn Janeway was played by one of my all-time favorite people - the incredible Kate Mulgrew. Kate Mulgrew's real life story is even more powerful and moving than the many great characters she has played over the years including that of Captain Janeway. I recommend reading her autobiography - Born with Teeth.
