Setup
Recently received several emails (imaged below) attesting to how "they" have captured (skimmed) a provocative video of "me" and have captured all my contacts from Facebook, Email, and other social media sites. If I do not pay them a specified sum via the provided BitCoin (BTC) address, they will send the video to all of my contacts.
Background
Since 6/4/2018 I have received a total of 3 emails, eliciting the same basic story. The first one was the most reasonable, in comparison to the other two. In either case, neither was believable based on me knowing my own person habits and behaviors.
Unlike most phishing emails, these do not contain a link, ask for identifying information or have an attachment. These emails simply provide the BitCoin address to send payments to.
Forensics
- The body of the text is weirdly formatted
- In the most resent, they add perceivably random names in between paragraphs. Probably to help avoid spam filters
- The email itself is generally structured. It never says exactly what they captured, only that it is pornographic in content or suggestive. In which case, this depends on the culture in which you live to denote your cultures perception and definition of pornographic content.
- The template text was not properly formatted, to remove sections or elements. Refere to Email #2 & #3, look at the bottom for " [CASE-sensitive copy & paste it] ". This should have been the section to be copy and pasted into, instead of below.
