Milky way over Table Mountain
Every photo of the milky I've ever seen of the Tetons if from the east side facing south or west so last year I decided to be different. I found a place where the view from the West side (the best side as the saying goes) was absolutely incredible. A little known place called Table Mountain (11,106 ft) where you are right across from Grand Teton (13,775 ft).
Me and a friend spent a couple days backpacking up there but only had 1 night of clear skies. Since this spot is well above the tree line and we hiked in June we had to camp about 2 miles down the trail. The hike up through wet snow was terrible and exhausting and the wind on the ridge was strong enough to knock over tripods.
We stayed and shot until about 1 am then made the trek back to camp, this time the snow was good and icy. Ice isn't good when you're hiking down a face with a thousand foot drop in the dark.
As we got nearer to our camp we came across deer and wolf tracks in the snow, surely the wolves had dinner that night. The tracks weren't there on our way up. My friends handgun went from his pack to his hip rather quickly.
Not to long afterwards, and only a few hundred yards from camp we came across beat track's in the snow that were also not there earlier that day. We know because you could see our foot prints in the snow from earlier. That's when my bear spray went from my pack to my hand. My first thought was, "I sure hope our bear bag was high enough from the ground and far enough from the tree or this trip is going to end on day one. Fortunately the food was still there and we didn't see any tracks near our camp....until the next morning. Despite seeing tracks we never did see a bear.
What an adventure it was!
Well that's curious. Look at my feed...What are the odds!
