Twin Bolts

This image was taken about 20 years ago when I was learning to photograph electrical storms. It was a low light event, shot on grainy film. But it still came out unique and interesting. I thought I'd share it.

I so like storm photos there is something so powerful in them , show how little we are and how strong the nature is

In agreement with you I can say that I have always been fascinated by the power and energy that storms display. We also see that mankind is vulnerable to these forces but the opposite is also true, Nature is weak and vulnerable when man exerts pressure on it. Thanks for the comment.

I honestly have no idea how people managed to capture lightning strikes in the pre-digital camera age. Beautiful shot!

The ones at night you would just use a bulb setting which leaves the lens open, but in the daytime much trickier! Either you get lucky and press the button as it happens or.. Unless you have a lightning trigger which we did.. That makes it a lot easier, it's device you can buy that has a sensor that takes the picture when the lightning strikes. They still sell these for newer digital cameras as well as it's still a useful tool even with the newer cameras. :) Hope that helps you understand the process more!

Hey ' thanks. It used to be quite difficult during the day as Paul explained it well. It was even hard using the lightning trigger which I think I got this shot with.

Yeah it is a lil noisy, but wow! What a neat shot. That's really cool how it's lit up in the middle, and gets dark on the sides, almost like the lightning itself is lighting it all up. Really cool! Nice work, and maybe there's something that can be done about the noisyness. I remember a program on the internet that claims to increase the resolution of images if you wanted to try to improve the graininess. Might be worth it! I could definitely see this on a larger framed one!

Yea Paul thanks, I don't know why the center is lit up and then black right next to it. It kinda gives it an old time effect and adds some symmetry and mystery.

Great shot and I guess it was especially difficult back then. Were you triggering the shutter mechanically or with a remote ? I might be wrong but I dont think remotes were available for film shooting.

Hi thanks, I used an electronic camera with a lightning trigger. The device when plugged into the camera opens the shutter when it detects a bright flash. There's a lot of flashes not in the frame that set it off, exposure time is a guess. Even though it was tricky you could get shots that were not otherwise possible.

Wow i didnt know that technology was available 20 years ago, I presumed you used the Bulb mode in combination with a mechanic remote but if I think about it that would have moved the camera and ruin the shot.

I think the lightning triggers were just coming out when we started using them. They were very new! But yeah.. It has been a while! Time really flies sometimes..

I was pretty young back then but my grandfather was passionate about photography and he even got a film developing device. me and my brother were sitting in the dark and we were mesmerized seeing the photos developed...eh time really flies. I still have an Exacta VX500 and some pentacon mechanical triggers that I first figuered @irvinesimages used.

That's awesome. :) Sounds like some great memories. It's pretty amazing how much photographic technology has advanced! But film still has its uses, though it seems to be getting rarer and rarer. I have to say I like my digital camera more just because it's so much easier. So.. I'm glad to see the technology advance so much.

The problem with using bulb is that it dosn't work if there's too much light. during daylight.

Great shot , that was 20 years ago? where did you took it?

This oldie but goodie was taken in Sedona Arizona USA.. Thanks for comment.
