Harvard University is rated the number one university in World University Rankings 2009. Harvard is the oldest American institution of higher education, founded 140 years before the Declaration of Independence was signed. The University has grown from nine students with a single master to Entrance of over 18,000 degree candidates, including students and students in 10 major academic units. An additional 13,000 students enrolled in one or more courses at the Harvard Extension School. Over 14,000 people work at Harvard, including more than 2,000 faculty. There are also 7,000 faculty appointments teaching in affiliated hospitals.

The University of Oxford is the oldest English-speaking university located in the city of Oxford, England. The history of this university can be traced at least from the end of the 11th century, although the exact date of its foundation remains unclear. According to legend, after the outbreak of unrest between students and city dwellers in 1209, some Oxford academics fled to the northeast, to the city of Cambridge, and founded the University of Cambridge. Both universities have since competed with each other, and are the most selective college in the United Kingdom.
