I used to visit Olango Island in Mactan Cebu, Philippines whenever I needed some peace and quiet. I do it on weekends to get away from the busy city where I live.
The island is only less than an hour away from mainland Mactan, and getting there is easy. Scheduled boat trips are available everyday. That is why I choose to go there on weekends.
I choose to go around the island using a bicycle . I can rent a bike at a shop near the port for a very affordable price. By doing so, I get to exercise my legs, enjoy the sun, and help local entrepreneurs.
Biking around the island re-establishes my connection with nature. It gets me to think how much has changed in the environment. It makes me wonder how much damage have I done to the environment and what can I do to help it.
This island has become a sanctuary for migrating birds. Local and foreign birds are free to fly in and out of the island as it is a protected area.
Seafoods in abundant in Olango Island. From fish to seashells, they are easy to find, and very affordable too.
So, if you ever visit Cebu, add Olango Island to your itinerary. You will never regret it. A weekend getaway is worth the trip.
