I noticed some movement on the groud while walking and looked closer to find a horned lizard also called horned toad by some. He did not seem worried about me and remained still as I took his photo. His colors blended in nicely and had he not moved ever so slightly I would have never seen him. One way these guy defend themselves is by shooting blood out of their eyes into a predators mouth (haven't tried, but its on my list). Apparently the blood has a less than desirable taste and will make some predators back off. I have never actually seen one shoot blood, but it is well documented by many.
Crouching camera dude and the hidden blood shooting horned toad!
