You have a goal, and you desire deeply to achieve it. But everytime you start, you become afraid. There's a lot of work, a lot of self-doubt, a lot of suffering to get there. So you stop because you don't want to suffer.
What if, instead of suffering along a path of hard work, you rode a wave of constant enjoyment?
It's hard to run five miles, isn't it?
But how hard is it to get to that tree fifty yards ahead of you?
When you get to it, congratulate yourself. You have made the fifty yards. Celebrate as if you've achieved a great goal! Why not? There's no harm in pretending.
And when you run past it, start toward the next tree, traffic sign, or any object close by, and when you have reached it, celebrate again.
With every achievement, remind yourself of where your goal is, and realise how it keeps getting closer to you.
See how you feel at the end. :)
You can make an exercise out of this. Try this technique when going from one place to another. Treat it as a silly harmless game if you want. But I can tell you one thing. This is stronger than you can ever imagine. Our minds are constantly learning and adapting. We can train ourselves to perceive our efforts as a series of small achievements, and we can learn to realise how much joy every single achievement brings us.
Always remember: take a small step and celebrate it as a great achievement!
