ADHD Children - How to tire them out naturally! - Climbing trees of course!

in photography •  7 years ago  (edited)

Some people may know that my son has a few additional needs, ADHD being one of the labels that the doc's like to use. Basically he is hyperactive to the extreme! So how do we calm him down on the day's when it is getting too much for him? We take him to the woods and let him climb trees to burn that extra energy off of course! haha

Even though he is now 13, he still loves being outdoors (once we have prized him away from his XBox). There is nothing he loves more than running around and climbing things, so what better way to spend the day than tree climbing.

ADHD is just one of the issues he has to deal with on a daily basis and it can be all consuming. We have tried medications and to be honest, they cause more issues so we have found that when it all gets too much, the best way to deal with it is to let him be hyper outdoors in a way that is fun and will also allow him to tire himself out.

Here are a few pictures I took of him enjoying the great outdoors! :)

If you have any questions about ADHD, feel free to ask. Lots of children have various degrees of ADHD so each child is different, but if I can offer help and advice to any parent who is struggling, I would be glad to help :)

Your son is awesome, @beautifulbullies .
Nature and communicating with nature heals and cures and soothes like nothing else in this world.
I would like to put forth a different perspective. I would like to say that your son is full of immense Passion, Drive and Focus. He will excel in the talent he is gifted with. He is a free soul. Like a river charting his own course. My love and blessings to your awesome son. Love to you. You are a gorgeous and an amazing Mom !:)

Thank you @nehab! :) Yes, he is certainly all of those things! I love his differences, they make him unique. I wish the world was just as accepting as you or I though, but unfortunately we have to fit into pigeon holes in society. I know my son will find his way in life, no matter what as he truly does have a passion for whatever he focuses his attentions on. Thank you for your kind words :)

Fitting into the pigeon holes is not for the gifted. Edison, Einstein, Van Gogh, if they had fitted into pigeon holes, we would still be living in the Dark Ages . The opinion of the herd is inconsequential.
Talented people are like beautiful exotic flowers. They just need a little extra protection and care. But when they bloom , their radiance is unmatched ! :) ...
Blessings and Prosperity to you and your son and family, @beautifulbullies :)

Such great way to use some of all energy, outdoors is amazing. I haven't own experience from ADHD but I have friends with kids that have ADHD. They seems to be able to make a lot of things, not always great for them so I guess that helping them to focus all energy in great outdoors activities must be great.

One of the main issues he faces is when he gets overwhelmed with his hyperactivity, is that it causes issues with his tourette's, (He has full body spasms that look similar to a fit) so if we can intercept it before it gets to that stage, it is much better for him. The outdoors really is one of the best ways to do this for us :)

I understand that and I wish more people thought this way, might help them a lot, depending on their kids diagnosis.

It is hard as a parent because you want the doctor to tell you 'here, take this pill and you will be all better' but in reality, they don't know how to treat it. I think there are too many differences and nobody knows a child like the parent, so I think taking a doctor's advice is OK, but sometimes a parent knows better. My son is very self aware too and can talk openly about how he is feeling, which helps a lot as we can tackle it together. Schooling is an issue, but that is a whole other blog lol

Much love to you <3

thank you :)

Great idea! I have a girl that tends towards that and it's so much better to take an outdoor break than continuous negative energy created through correction and more correction.

It really does seem to work for us. I find that when I am constantly asking him to calm down or try not to bounce around the house like a playground, we just end up arguing! But when we go outdoors, he can burn off the extra energy and then things are much easier when we get back home. :)

I agree! And the sunshine and fresh air have a lovely calming effect.

As a fellow ADHD person, I do vaguely remember being a young person with lots of energy. Now I'm a tired ADHD person.

That first picture, though, is astounding. He's like a little faerie of the woods on that branch. This is definitely a keeper and one I predict he'll be sharing himself as an adult.

I absolutely love the first picture, it shows his personality perfectly! He is definitely a free spirit :)

This makes me so happy! Hyperactive children are not a burden and it kills me to see parents medicate to the extreme just to help their kids function. I would never claim to understand the life of an ADHD child or parent but to see you just getting your son outside and active is inspiring. I bet it helps him (and everyone) so much.

thank you :) Yes it does help us all. We get to spend time together laughing as well as making memories, and he gets to release some of his highly strung feelings and emotions as well as burning off his extra energy and always seem calmer afterwards. Medication has it's place, but I feel as though there are always better ways to approach something if you look hard enough for a solution :)

really amazing guy he is gorgeous wish him all the best

Thank you :) Yes he is a fantastic little chap :)

Nature is the best medicine, I really believe that when we are outdoors our energy flows better. Beautiful photos, thank you for sharing them with us.

I totally agree! Nature is the best medicine :) thank you for your comment

My daughter has ADHD amongst other problems, she's now 25 now and doing great, she's on here now @jlou :)

Awww fantastic! Glad she has joined us! :D Great to hear from you @karenb54, we haven't spoken in ages! :) I hope you are well? x

I'm plodding on thank you. Pop over and have a read of her posts you could show your son too, it might help him when he sees things can get better :)

I will defo do that! He is having to decide his GCSE options at the minute, which is causing all kinds of anxiety. It is crazy to think that he has to decide these things at this age! He seems way to young still

They put far to much pressure on them, why can't they just be children. I remember those horrible exams, caused so much stress. Tell him it does get better, concentrate on one class at a time and don't forget he's a very special little boy that has amazing qualities. He will find what he is brilliant at just take one day at a time. :)

What a solution much better then big pharma BS! I find more and more kids are diagnosed with ADHD I don't buy it myself. I personally think its kids not getting out enough and the long school day spend conditioning them. The kids with ADHD show potential and energy, these kids are the future the ones who can make a change. You are dealing with it amazingly 💯🐒

thank you :) It can be a challenge, especially when school can't cope with him, but I have learned that I have to stand up for him with school. I had a conversation with the teacher today and basically told them that if they aren't happy with the work he is producing then they are failing him and I will go back to home schooling him. The only reason he is back in a school environment is because he missed being with children his own age, so if they cannot help him to develop his mind and talents, then I will remove him from their presence. She didn't know what to say lol

Unfortunately if they don't fit the mould the are ousted. My ex's boy was the same. Also me I am dyslexic in the 80's / 90's this just meant you were a problem child (bit like ADHD today). They told me I would amount to nothing and get no qualification. Well I have a foundation degree and got a 2:1 in my Bsc. Just has to find the right way to learn. do what you think is right don't listen to the programmers. Its great he does not fit the mould means he has potential 💯🐒

Wow! great work! Yea, I thinkpeople with potential get bored easily with the norm too, which is one of my son't biggest issues with school. they only have an hour in each subject and when he finds something interesting to him, he wants to spend the wole day on it and learn all there is to know about it, whereas if it doesn't catch his eye or he thinks it is boring, he would rather go to sleep in class :/ lol Hence why I am always getting called into school! haha

We miss the key thing here! Kids would learn so much better if they were interested in something. When we get older we can choose when not when we are young? Seem odd to me we should develop our interests even at a younger age this would create a passion and knowledge in out passions. We can always relearn. I went back to uni a 35 did fine! 💯🐒
