Last Monday we went for a couple of days to Middelburg, the capital of the province of Zeeland. The municipality Middelburg counts 48.081 inhabitants and lies on the former island of Walcheren. The inner town is a 'treasury' consisting of about 1,100 national monuments.
We were a bit early for our check in, so we walked to the city center, where we were surprised by a fair on the market square in front of the Town Hall of Middelburg. After we had lunch we could not resist to try some of the fair attractions.
When it was time for our check in we walked back to our hotel at the Loskade 45, where we got a room with a nice view on the 'Kanaal door Walcheren' with lots of ships sailing by through the day.
Middelburg has a mascot: the abbey tower 'Lange Jan' (Tall John), which has a height of about 89 m. I you are fit enough to climb all the 207 steps to the top you will have a view that is worth all your efforts, especially on clear days.
There is a lot to do in Middelburg, such as visiting the Zeeuws Museum. I will dedicate my next post to this subject.
